About the Lab

Professor Sukmin Yoon's research lab focuses on interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of Korean literature, philosophy, and cultural studies, with a particular emphasis on narrative philosophy, Confucian ethics, and transnational cultural exchange. The lab explores how literary and philosophical texts—especially classical Korean texts like the *I Ching* (Book of Changes) and modern Korean romance novels—function as vehicles for ethical self-awareness, identity formation, and cross-cultural communication. It also investigates historical religious movements among Korean diasporas, particularly in Manchuria, and their role in preserving national consciousness under colonial rule. The lab integrates narrative theory, ethical hermeneutics, and cultural semiotics to analyze how meaning, morality, and identity are constructed across time and space.

The popularity of Korean romance novels in contemporary China: A feminist interpretation
Yang Yi, Seokmin Yoon
SJR Q2The Journal of Popular CultureOA

Abstract This essay deals with Korean romance novels translated into Chinese, especially the works of Kim Ha‐in and Guiyeoni which forms a pattern of cross‐cultural communication from the marginal culture to the center. Most studies treat them as an aspect of fast‐food culture that undermines serious literature, with little attention to this literary and cultural phenomenon. Why are Korean romance novels so popular in contemporary China? There are some answers from different perspectives. Howeve

Development of a distributed chemical event system
Young Yoon, Seokmin Yoon, Minjoong Yoon

We introduce the ideas of developing a distributed event-based system for screening and monitoring the activities that can lead to the production of hazardous chemicals such as explosive materials and narcotic drugs. This system is built on top of the state-of-the-art content-based publish/subscribe messaging substrate that processes complex chemical events in a robust and scalable way. This system also leverages the chemical information encoded in semantic chemistry networks to identify any und

Migration of Korean Daejonggyo Believers to Manchuria in the Early 20th Century and Their Consciousness of Ancient Territory
Seokmin Yoon, Young-Jin Kim, Yi Yang
SJR Q1ReligionsOA

In the late Joseon dynasty, many Koreans crossed the border between Joseon and Qing for survival. They then migrated to Manchuria, in the Qing territory, around Mt. Baekdu. In the late 1900s, Japan seized diplomatic and military control of Korea, and in 1910, Korea was annexed by Japan. Many Koreans then moved to the Manchurian region of China. Religion played an important role in the large Korean community formed in Manchuria after the 1910s. During this period, Korean immigrant communities tha
