About the Lab

Professor Sun-Hee Lee's research lab focuses on chronic disease management and long-term outcomes in pediatric and adolescent populations, with a strong emphasis on metabolic and autoimmune conditions such as type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer survivorship. The lab investigates cardiovascular risk factors, including nocturnal hypertension and subclinical atherosclerosis, as well as psychosocial determinants like stress and self-esteem in youth mental health. Additionally, the lab explores treatment adherence, fertility preservation in cancer survivors, and outcomes in critical care settings such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for cardiac arrest. The research integrates clinical, epidemiological, and longitudinal data to improve quality of life and long-term health trajectories in vulnerable populations.

SJR Q1Diabetes CareOA

OBJECTIVE: Diabetes is associated with atherogenic risk factors. Hypertension has a major influence on cardiovascular disease in diabetic patients. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is useful for identifying nocturnal hypertension. Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) is a good measure for identifying subclinical atherosclerosis. This study aimed to evaluate whether nocturnal hypertension affects atherosclerosis in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and to investigate the r

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a useful treatment for refractory out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). However, little is known about the predictors of survival and neurologic outcome after ECMO. We analyzed our institution's experience with ECMO for refractory OHCA and evaluated the predictors of survival and neurologic outcome after ECMO. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of the medical records of 23 patients who were treated with ECMO due to OHCA that was un

Reduced male fertility in childhood cancer survivors
Sun Hee Lee, Choong Ho Shin
SJR Q1Annals of Pediatric Endocrinology & MetabolismOA

With advances in cancer treatment, more pediatric cancer patients have increased their life expectancy. Because cancer-related therapy causes various physical and psychological problems, many male survivors experience later problems with thyroid and sexual functions, and with growth. As outcomes have improved, more survivors need to maintain their reproductive function to maximize their long-term quality of life. Cancer and cancer-related treatment can impair fertility by damage to the testes, t

BACKGROUND: Poor adherence with oral bisphosphonates (BPs) can mitigate their therapeutic benefit for osteoporosis and is a significant clinical burden. Most previous studies regarding adherence with oral BPs have focused on postmenopausal osteoporosis, but little attention has been given to patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Thus, we investigated compliance and persistence with oral BPs in the treatment of osteoporosis and analyzed risk factors for poor adherence in female patients with (

Although a decrease in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related mortality has been documented in highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era, there are no published data comparing specific causes of death between pre-HAART and HAART era in Korea. Mortality and cause of death were analyzed in three treatment periods; pre-HAART (1990-1997), early-HAART (1998-2001), and late-HAART period (2002-2011). The patients were retrospectively classified according to the treatment period in whi

During the last decade a great deal of paleomagnetic results have accumulated, and their accuracy and reliability have been increased significantly by improved demagnetisation techniques. In the present thesis all available paleomagnetic data have been analysed for the purposes of providing more understanding of characteristics of the geomagnetic field through geological time. Also, physical implications for geodynamo theory have been sought! As preparatory procedures, data selection, the separa

A retrospective study was conducted to determine the mortality, causes and risk factors for death among HIV-infected patients receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Korea. The outcomes were determined by time periods, during the first year of ART and during 1-5 yr after ART initiation, respectively. Patients lost to follow-up were traced to ascertain survival status. Among 327 patients initiating ART during 1998-2006, 68 patients (20.8%) died during 5-yr follow-up periods. Mortality rate per
