About the Lab
Professor Sun-i Kim's research lab specializes in advanced electrochemical technologies for sustainable resource recovery and environmental remediation. The lab focuses on developing innovative electrochemical systems for the selective recovery of critical metals—particularly lithium—from complex aqueous sources such as seawater and brines, while simultaneously addressing water purification challenges. Key research directions include the design of novel electrode materials (e.g., metal-organic frameworks, MnO₂ polymorphs) and membrane-free capacitive deionization systems to enhance ion selectivity, capacity, and energy efficiency. The lab also explores electrochemical CO₂ capture from ocean water and the simultaneous removal of organic pollutants, demonstrating a strong commitment to clean technology and circular resource management.

15Based on a porous carbon electrode, capacitive deionization (CDI) is a promising desalination technology in which ions are harvested and stored in an electrical double layer.
Abstract Capacitive deionization (CDI) that engages porous carbon electrodes constitutes one of the well‐established energy‐efficient desalination methods. However, improvement in desalination performance, including ion removal capacity, ion removal rate, and charge efficiency remains requisite for a wide range of applications. Herein, an ion‐exchange membrane‐free asymmetric CDI is introduced by pairing a metal organic framework (MOF), namely, K 0.03 Cu[Fe(CN) 6 ] 0.65 ·0.43H 2 O and porous car
A novel electrochemical system comprising λ-MnO2 and BDD is proposed for simultaneous recovery of lithium and decomposition of organic pollutants.
Due to the steep increase in the use of mobile electronics and electric vehicles, there has been a dramatic rise in the global lithium consumption. Although seawater is considered as an ideal future source of lithium, technological advances are necessary to ensure the economic feasibility of lithium recovery from seawater because the concentration and portion of Li+ are extremely low in seawater. Especially, battery-based electrochemical systems for lithium recovery have been considered as promi
CO 2 is removed from oceanwater acidified during chloride-mediated electrochemically modulated reaction of bismuth electrodes.
Recently developed electrochemical lithium recovery systems, whose operation principle mimics that of lithium-ion battery, enable selective recovery of lithium from source waters with a wide range of lithium ions (Li+) concentrations; however, physicochemical behaviors of the key component-Li+-selective electrode-in realistic operation conditions have been poorly understood. Herein, we report an investigation on a λ-MnO2 electrode during the electrochemical lithi
Owing to the rapid growth of the global industry, the importance of securing the supply of resources has increased dramatically. Magnesium is a metallic resource that is in large and steady demands. Current processes for Mg production and refinement require large energy consumption, and additionally, there are environmental issues combined with the mining process. Herein, we report an electrochemical system that selectively recovers Mg 2+ from mixture solutions, potentially targeting the applica
In recent years, electrochemical desalination and resource recovery processes have gained significant attention as means of utilizing waters, wherein the majority of anionic species are chloride ions. There have been research efforts to develop high‐performance electrode materials for the chloride uptake. Silver with extremely fast kinetics is an ideal option, but the cost and stability issues are yet to be resolved. Herein, silver nanoparticles with nitrogen‐doped carbon (NC) shells are develop
This study examines the consumer behavior towards service satisfaction and loyalty in the wedding service market when differentiated services were provided through a market segmentation that includes products, prices, and channels for service choices. This study uses the questionnaire research method to compare the wedding service consumer satisfaction between Korea and Japan. As for married couples, the convenience of transportation and name-recognition were the most important considerations am

Magnesium is the lightest structured metal on earth and is widely adopted in weight-sensitive applications and next-generation energy storage techniques. However, magnesium is currently produced by an energy-intensive process or by heavy use of chemicals, and there is a need to develop a new route to address these issues. In this study, electrochemical separ
