About the Lab
Professor Sun Min Park's research lab specializes in translational biomedical research, focusing on metabolic disease mechanisms and advanced cancer therapies. Key research directions include the molecular regulation of beta cell function and survival in diabetes, particularly through insulin receptor substrate 2 (Irs2) signaling and its modulation by glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists. The lab also investigates image-guided radiation therapy, especially stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), for small hepatocellular carcinoma, aiming to optimize oncologic outcomes and understand treatment response. Additionally, the lab explores clean combustion technologies in internal combustion engines, emphasizing nanoparticle emissions and fuel efficiency in alternative fuels such as LPG and gasoline.

15The insulin receptor substrate 2 (Irs2) branch of the insulin/insulin-like growth factor-signaling cascade prevents diabetes in mice because it promotes beta cell replication, function, and survival, especially during metabolic stress. Because exendin-4 (Ex4), a long acting glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist, has similar effects upon beta cells in rodents and humans, we investigated whether Irs2 signaling was required for Ex4 action in isolated beta cells and in Irs2(-/-) mice. Ex4 increas
The etiology and disease patterns of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) significantly vary among regions. Modern standard treatments commonly require multidisciplinary approaches, including applications of up-to date medicine and advanced procedures, and necessitate the support of socioeconomic systems. For these reasons, a number of clinical guidelines for HCC from different associations and regions have been presented. External beam radiation therapy was contraindicated for HCC until a few decades
BACKGROUND AND AIM: The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term oncologic outcomes after stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: A total of 290 patients with HCC were registered between March 2007 and July 2013. A dose of 10-15 Gy per fraction was given over three to four consecutive days, resulting in a total dose of 30-60 Gy. Overall and recurrence-free survivals were estimated from the date of the start of SBRT to the date o
This study focuses on the experimental comparison of combustion phenomena and nanoparticle emission characteristics from a wall-guided direct-injection (DI) spark ignition engine for gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). A returnless gasoline direct-injection (GDI) fuel supply system was reworked for the return-type liquid-phase LPG injection fuel supply system that was composed of an LPG tank with a brushless d.c. pump and a low-pressure regulator to supply the stable liquid-phase LPG for
Fractionated radiotherapy achieves both symptomatic and radiologic improvements. It is a well-tolerated treatment modality for hemangiomas of the cavernous sinus.
PURPOSE: Breast radiotherapy set-up is often uncertain. Actual dose distribution to normal tissues could be different from planned dose distribution. The objective of this study was to investigate such difference in dose distribution according to the extent of set-up error in breast radiotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 50 Gy with fraction size of 2 Gy was given to 30 left breasts with different set-ups applying a deep inspiration breath holding (DIBH) or a free breathing (FB) techniqu
<b>Purpose:</b> Administration of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) to ultra-central (UC) lung tumors, generally defined as those abutting the proximal bronchial trees, is difficult due to concerns about serious toxicities. Therefore, our institution has performed moderate-intensity SBRT. <b>Patients and methods:</b> Patients with UC tumors underwent SBRT at a dose of 50-60 Gy in 10 fractions, with <i>D</i>max in the target volume not exceeding 110% of the prescribed dose. Th
Vertebral artery recanalization in symptomatic stenosis/occlusion remains controversial, as no definite evidence exists regarding this topic. There are only a few reports regarding the feasibility and safety of recanalization in the first segment of the vertebral artery with atherosclerotic vertebral ostial occlusion. We report our experience treating first segment occlusion in 8 patients and present a balloon protection technique used to reduce the thromboembolic burden during the stent placeme
PURPOSE: The features of past and contemporary phase III clinical trials for radiotherapy were reviewed to activate future clinical trials and to advise on actual clinical practice. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The phase III clinical trials for radiotherapy were searched in the database of 'ClinicalTrials.gov' by the U.S. National Institute of Health. Using the staring date, the studies during each period of 4 years were collected for the past (from Jan 2000 to Dec 2003) and contemporary (July 2014 to
Background and Objective: Investigations on the clinical impact of supraclavicular lymph node (SCN) involvement in stage IIIC non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remain scarce. We evaluated the oncological outcomes of definitive radiochemotherapy and the clinical significance of SCN involvement. Materials and Methods: Between November 2009 and June 2019, a total of 40 patients with N3-positivity and NSCLC were evaluated. Most patients received concomitant chemotherapy, but six patients who receiv
EBRT after incomplete TACE was feasible and yielded favorable oncologic outcomes. However, disease progression related to intrahepatic failure remained a hindrance.
PORT is associated with a relatively favorable survival outcome in PC with R1 resection. Chemotherapy and postoperative CA19-9 level were significant prognostic factors for survival.
Background . We sought to analyze the preferred treatment modality by age and liver function in South Korea. Methods . The Korean Liver Cancer Study Group randomly extracted the data of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) enrolled in the Korean Central Cancer Registry from 2008 to 2014 from approximately 50 hospitals nationwide. After excluding distant and lymphatic metastases, the treatment preference for patients with a single lesion (excluding PVT (portal vein thrombosis), hepatic ve
