About the Lab

Professor Sun-Young Ahn’s research lab focuses on interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of language cognition, second language acquisition, and educational technology. The lab investigates how bilingualism affects first language perception and mental representation, particularly in relation to age of reduced L1 use, and explores the role of mental imagery and semantic integration in second language reading comprehension. Additionally, the lab develops and evaluates computerized formative assessment tools grounded in cognitive diagnosis theory to enhance student learning outcomes in mathematics and attitudes toward learning.

Age Effects in First Language Attrition: Speech Perception by Korean‐English Bilinguals
Sunyoung Ahn, Charles B. Chang, Robert DeKeyser, Sunyoung Lee‐Ellis
SJR Q1Language LearningOA

Abstract This study investigated how bilinguals’ perception of their first language (L1) differs according to age of reduced contact with L1 after immersion in a second language (L2). Twenty‐one L1 Korean‐L2 English bilinguals in the United States, ranging in age of reduced contact from 3 to 15 years, and 17 control participants in Korea were tested perceptually on three L1 contrasts differing in similarity to L2 contrasts. Compared to control participants, bilinguals were less accurate on L1‐sp

Automatic semantic integration during L2 sentential reading
Sunyoung Ahn, Nan Jiang
SJR Q1Bilingualism Language and Cognition

Research has shown that L1 speakers can routinely generate mental imagery corresponding to sentence meaning in reading comprehension. This may reflect an efficient process of semantic integration in which information from the input combines with an individual's linguistic and real world knowledge to form a semantic representation of a sentence. Semantic integration in L2 reading has received limited attention. The present study attempted to examine the activation of mental imagery in reading amo

New Sincerity, New Worldliness: The Post-9/11 Fiction of Don DeLillo and David Foster Wallace
Sunyoung Ahn
SJR Q1Critique Studies in Contemporary Fiction

Post-9/11 literature has been noted as lacking in critical force because it fails to envision America mediated by global history and international politics. The post-9/11 narratives of Don DeLillo and David Foster Wallace, however, attempt to move away from American insularity and attain worldliness, specifically by abandoning the influence of postmodernism, which seemed to reinforce the provincial, self-involved nature of American culture by fostering the ideas of indeterminacy, irony, and dept

Humanism Contra Post-humanism
Sunyoung Ahn
SJR Q1Historical MaterialismOA

Abstract Post-humanism accuses humanism of inventing a human subject who is domineering and destructive. As a remedy, it redefines the human as a being informed by passivity and finitude and bound by ontological vulnerability. In so doing, it undermines the creative and transformative power of human agency and obliterates politics and history as shaped by human actions. Noting how this intensifies the experience of alienation and de-humanisation, the essay looks to Marxist and socialist humanism

The Great Refusal in Philip Roth’s American Pastoral
Sunyoung Ahn
SJR Q2Journal of American Studies

Ever since the publication of Philip Roth’s American Pastoral, critics have debated whether the text’s unfavorable and reductive depiction of the radicals in the long 1960s can be attributed to Roth’s own conservatism. The debate has been in part further aroused by his supposedly more sympathetic account of the fall of the protagonist “the Swede,” who embraces all things considered as standing for America itself. However, by drawing on various historical contexts and materials ―the history of th

Animal Ethics and the Human Question in J. M. Coetzee’s Disgrace
Sunyoung Ahn
SJR Q1The Journal of English Language and LiteratureOA

In Disgrace, J. M. Coetzee scrutinizes what it might mean, in post-apartheid South Africa still fraught with racial and political animosity, to tell the story of a disgraced man learning to relate to animals with compassion and humility. The novel highlights the urgency of this animal ethics in that it mitigates the cruelty of utilitarian logic that reduces all living beings to the status of disposable things. In addition, it interrogates the ways in which speciesism operates hand-in-hand with r

Chasing a Moving Target: Environmental Justice in Amitav Ghosh’s The Hungry Tide
Sunyoung Ahn
Studies in Modern Fiction

In Amitav Ghosh’s The Hungry Tide (2004) are the stories of humans and animals, who suffer the consequences of British colonialism, state violence, and even well-intentioned conservationist movements. Especially prominent is the story of the indigenous population of humans and tigers in the islands of the Sundarbans, whose well-being is pit against one another so that justice for humans leads to a neglect of tigers, and likewise, justice for tigers leads to a dismissal of humans. Against this di

BAYESIAN INFERENCE OF LONGITUDINAL BINARY AND ORDINAL DATA UTILIZING MULTIVARIATE PROBIT MODELS
Sunyoung Ahn

This dissertation explores advanced Bayesian inference methods for analyzing longitudinal binary and ordinal data, with a focus on multivariate probit models. In medical and survey research, responses often follow an ordinal structure, presenting unique challenges due to their discrete, ordered nature. Traditional statistical methods, including Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs), Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE), and joint maximum likelihood estimation model, partially address these c
