About the Lab
Professor Sung-hee Choi's research lab focuses on feminist performance studies, critical pedagogy, and contemporary American theatre, with an emphasis on the intersection of gender, embodiment, and aesthetic innovation. Her work explores transformative pedagogical models that center emotion, lived experience, and performative knowledge, challenging dominant rationalist frameworks in humanities education. She investigates the dramaturgy of contemporary playwrights like Sarah Ruhl through philosophical lenses such as Nietzsche’s Apolline and Dionysiac, reimagining tragedy as a site of renewal and resistance. The lab also engages with multiculturalism in Asian American theatre and the redefinition of literary canons to include hip-hop and popular performance as legitimate forms of poetic and dramatic expression.

15The purpose of this paper is to share and to analyze problems and issues discussed by major scholars of feminist pedagogy. I review their criticism of traditional approaches (including critical pedagogy) that over-emphasize reason/theory while neglecting (women’s) emotion/experience. Martindale's critique of so-called “nurturing” pedagogy, Middleton’s “life history pedagogy,” Jung’s “conflict pedagogy,” and Orner and Ellsworth’s criticism of moral superiority of paternalistic critical pedagogy a
This paper, which aims to delineate Sarah Ruhl’s unique position in the changing geography of women’s theatre in the U.S. today, investigates how Sarah Ruhl’s plays succeed both tradition of popular theatre and genealogy of feminist theatre with her unique aesthetics of “Ovidian dramaturgy.” First I devise and suggest a new theoretical framework called “feminism 3.0” which allows us to transcend the generational barriers of ‘wave’ model and explore the new territory of “a third space” in which d
The purpose of this paper is to analyze Sarah Ruhl’s “mourning trilogy”— Eurydice, The Clean House, and Dead Man’s Cell Phone—with the concepts of Apolline and Dionysiac based on Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy. We argue that Ruhl’s unique dramaturgy gives ‘rebirth’ to tragedy through the aesthetic convergence of Apolline and Dionysiac, which is especially well shown in the “mourning trilogy” in which Ruhl turns the mourning into a celebration and reaffirmation of life force by giving Apolline
This paper studies how the current debate on multiculturalism is reflected in the Asian American drama. Ethnic theatre, in which actor's live body foregrounds the racial identity that is primarily defined by physical difference, has been the most instant and vivid laboratory experimenting multiculturalism, the America's no. 1 hypothesis/ideal. Since the 1970s Asian American drama has attempted to re-vision idealistic assumptions of American Melting Pot, taking various forms of multiculturalism.
The background of the so-called “culture war” of academia is the collision between the traditional literary studies and anti-traditional cultural studies. On the one hand, the old school offers impassioned defenses of the notion of humanism as a foundation of (western) literature; on the other hand, a new generation of scholars contends that the current crisis of humanities can be seen as a result of the failure of the humanism. This argument leads into related critical issues concerning the fut
Judith Butler, with her theory of performativity, questions the idea of 'stable' identities to insist that identity exists only in a reiterated 'doing' that is coerced by a cultural apparatus. Querying the relation between performativity and performance, this paper first attempts to examine how theatrical performance is ‘othered’ by Austin and Butler who exclude performance from their theories of performativity and also by recent theories of avant-garde theatre—“ideology of modernisms.” Instead
This essay is an attempt to read Sarah Kane’s Blasted ‘based on violence,’ which is distinguished from dealing with violence just as means of representation; it is to see violence expressed in this play as necessary choice for Kane to reveal the reality she feels. In a word, what matters is the connection between violences looking irrelevant at first glance or in the common sense: i.e., the daily violence which seems to be personal and take place ‘here,’ and the terrible violence that we can wat
Teaching Drama as Cultural Studies:Beyond Binary Oppositions of Text/Performance, High/Low Culture
In the public/academic discourse on Americanization and modernization of Korea, which is dominated by male-centered socio-political metanarratives, women's experience has been largely ignored or marginalized. Questioning the "dominant reading" that posits women's Americanization as victim's history or negative side effect of modernization, this paper attempts to show how Korean women in the 1950s encountered, experienced, and translated American culture "differently" from nationalist male elites
In l ig ht o f recent t heoretical d iscussions on c osmopolitanism and cosmofeminism, this article sets out to find a new feminist vision and aesthetic in Lynn Nottage’s 2009 Pulitzer Prize winning play Ruined(2009) that can counteract both nationalism and globalization. First, problematizing both the patriarchal ideology of nationalism and its counterforce globalization, which is easily coopted by neoliberalist global capitalism, I suggest cosmopolitanism as an alternative ethical/aesthetic pr
