About the Lab
Professor Sung Hoon Kang's research lab focuses on the intersection of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, with cerebrovascular pathology and metabolic factors. The lab investigates the neurobiological and clinical correlates of amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition, white matter hyperintensities, and brain atrophy using multimodal imaging, biomarkers, and machine learning. Key research directions include predicting disease progression in mild cognitive impairment, understanding the role of cholesterol and small vessel disease in neurodegeneration, and identifying modifiable risk factors for Parkinson’s disease in Asian populations.

15The poor performance of most neuropsychological tests is closely related to cortical thinning in specific brain areas in Alzheimer's continuum. Our analysis of Aβ positivity involving a large sample classified according to the stratified cognitive states and WMH severity indicates that Alzheimer and cerebral small vessel diseases lie on a continuum.
