About the Lab

Professor Sung Joon Kim's research lab focuses on cellular signaling mechanisms underlying stress responses and disease pathogenesis, with a particular emphasis on ion channels, stress-activated kinases, and their roles in inflammation, cancer, and neurodegenerative conditions. The lab investigates TRPV1 and TASK-2 channels in keratinocytes and B cells, exploring their involvement in UV-induced damage, matrix degradation, and hypoxic adaptation. Additionally, the lab employs chemical genetics and molecular screening to identify novel substrates of stress-response kinases such as Hog1 and p38 MAPK, revealing new regulatory pathways in cell cycle control and protein synthesis. Transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) is a molecular sensor for detecting adverse stimuli, such as capsaicin, heat, and acid.
