About the Lab

Professor Sung-Kyoo Ahn's research lab focuses on advancing precision oncology in breast cancer, with a strong emphasis on understanding tumor heterogeneity, molecular subtypes, and prognostic biomarkers. The lab investigates the clinical and molecular implications of key genetic alterations—such as p53 mutations and receptor status—particularly in Korean patient populations. It also explores innovative imaging techniques, like ex vivo shear-wave elastography, to improve the accuracy of lymph node metastasis detection during surgery. Overall, the lab integrates clinical oncology with molecular pathology to identify therapeutic targets and improve patient outcomes in metastatic and aggressive breast cancer subtypes.

Purpose: Bone is the most frequent site of metastasis among breast cancer patients. We investigated prognostic factors affecting survival following bone-only metastasis in breast cancer patients. Materials and Methods: The medical records of breast cancer patients who were treated and followed at Gangnam Severance Hospital retrospectively reviewed to identify patients with bone-only metastasis. Results: The median time from the diagnosis of bone-only metastasis to the last follow-up or death was

Molecular Classification of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer
안성귀, 김승준, Cheungyeul Kim, 정준
Journal of Breast Cancer

Tumor heterogeneity of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) has been the main barrier in conquering breast cancer. To dissect the molecular diversity of TNBC and discover therapeutic targets for TNBC, the molecular classification of TNBC is a prioritized issue in research area. Accordingly, recent studies have been successful in classifying TNBC into several distinct subtypes with specific biologic pathways. Despite the different methodologies used and varied number of final subtypes, these stud

Purpose: The p53 gene is one of the most frequently mutatedgenes in breast cancer. We investigated the patterns and biologicfeatures of p53 gene mutation and evaluated their clinical significancein Korean breast cancer patients. Methods: Patients whounderwent p53 gene sequencing were included. Mutational analysisof exon 5 to exon 9 of the p53 gene was carried out usingpolymerase chain reaction-denaturing high performance liquidchromatography and direct sequencing. Results: A total of 497patients

Journal of Breast Cancer

Purpose: There is still a clinical need to easily evaluate the metastatic status of lymph nodes during breast cancer surgery. We hypothesized that ex vivo shear-wave elastography (SWE) would predict precisely the presence of metastasis in the excised lymph nodes. Methods: A total of 63 patients who underwent breast cancer surgery were prospectively enrolled in this study from May 2014 to April 2015. The excised axillary lymph nodes were examined using ex vivo SWE. Metastatic status was confirmed

김영완, 김익용, 최은희, 권현준, 안성귀
http://ymj.kr/DOIx.php?id=10.3349/ymj.2014.55.5.1273

Purpose: To evaluate the influence of preoperative mechanical bowel preparation (MBP) based on the occurrence of anastomosis leakage, surgical site infection (SSI), and severity of surgical complication when performing elective colorectal surgery. Materials and Methods: MBP and non-MBP patients were matched using propensityscore. The outcomes were evaluated according to tumor location such as right- (n=84) and left-sided colon (n=50) and rectum (n=100). In the non-MBP group, patientswith right-s

Metastasis-Free Interval Is Closely Related to Tumor Characteristics and Has Prognostic Value in Breast Cancer Patients with Distant Relapse
김희준, 안성귀, 이학민, 박종태, 한경화, 이승아, 정준
Journal of Breast Cancer

Purpose: We investigated the relationships between metastasisfree interval (MFI) and tumor characteristics, and assessed the prognostic value of MFI for survival after metastasis in patients with metastatic breast cancer. Furthermore, we compared MFI among the subtypes. Methods: We identified 335 patients with postoperative tumor recurrence at distant site(s). All patients underwent curative resection and had a MFI of at least 6 months. MFI was categorized as short (<2 years), intermediate (≥2 y

Eribulin Mesylate Combined with Local Treatment for Brain Metastasis from Breast Cancer: Two Case Reports
변경도, 안성귀, 백형주, 이안복, 배기범, 안민성, 김광희, 신재호, 박하경, 조흥래, 정준, 김태현
Journal of Breast Cancer

The prognosis associated with brain metastasis arising from breast cancer is very poor. Eribulin is a microtubule dynamic inhibitor synthesized from halichondrin B, a natural marine product. In a phase III study (EMBRACE), eribulin improved overall survival in patients with heavily pretreated metastatic breast cancers. However, these studies included few patients with brain metastases. Metastatic brain tumors (MBT) were detected during first-line palliative chemotherapy in a 43-year-old woman wi

Comparison of Outcomes between Direct-to-Implant Breast Reconstruction Following Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy through Inframammary Fold Incision versus Noninframammary Fold Incision
노태석, 김재윤, 정복기, 정준, 안성귀, 김영석
Journal of Breast Cancer

Purpose: In properly selected patients with breast cancer, nipplesparing mastectomy (NSM) is generally considered safe by oncologic standards. We examined two groups of patients who underwent direct-to-implant (DTI) reconstruction after NSM, comparing complications encountered, revision rates, and aesthetic outcomes. The patients were stratified based on type of surgical incision and assigned to inframammary fold (IMF) and non-IMF groups. Methods: We investigated 141 patients (145 breasts) subje

Long-Term Survival Analysis of Korean Breast Cancer Patients at a Single Center: Improving Outcome Over Time
안성귀, 정준, 이학민, 이승아, 이희대
http://ymj.kr/DOIx.php?id=10.3349/ymj.2014.55.5.1187

Purpose: The prognosis of breast cancer has been consistently improving. We analyzedour cohort of breast cancer patients with a long-term follow up at a single center over time. Materials and Methods: A total of 1889 patients with known cancer stages were recruited and analyzed between January 1991 and December 2005. Patients were classified according to the time periods (1991--1995; 1996--2000; 2001--2005). To determine intrinsic subtypes, 858 patients whose human epidermal growth receptor-2 st

Risk Factors for a False-Negative Result of Sentinel Node Biopsy in Patients with Clinically Node-Negative Breast Cancer
이승아, 이학민, 이학우, 양반석, 박종태, 안성귀, 정준, 김승일

Purpose Although sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) can accurately represent the axillary lymph node (ALN) status, the false-negative rate (FNR) of SLNB is the main concern in the patients who receive SLNB alone instead of ALN dissection (ALND). Materials and Methods We analyzed 1,886 patients who underwent ALND after negative results of SLNB, retrospectively. A logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors associated with a falsenegative (FN) result. Cox regression model was use

Current Issues and Clinical Evidence in Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocytes in Breast Cancer
안성귀, 정준, 홍순원, 정우희

With the advance in personalized therapeutic strategies in patients with breast cancer, there is an increasing need for biomarker-guided therapy. Although the immunogenicity of breast cancer has not been strongly considered in research or practice, tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) are emerging as biomarkers mediating tumor response to treatments. Earlier studies have provided evidence that the level of TILs has prognostic value and the potential for predictive value, particularly in triple-
