Professor Sung Mi Park's research lab focuses on cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, with a particular emphasis on the pathophysiological mechanisms linking aging, hypertension, and cardiac dysfunction. The lab investigates molecular pathways involving key signaling molecules such as RIP1, NF-κB, and mTOR in cancer and cardiovascular disease, as well as the role of adipose tissue and arterial stiffness in metabolic syndrome. Using advanced imaging techniques like speckle tracking echocardiography and non-invasive hemodynamic measurements, the lab explores early markers of cardiac involvement in young and middle-aged adults with hypertension and metabolic risk factors.

Nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) activation may play an important role in the pathogenesis of cancer and also in resistance to treatment. Inactivation of the p53 tumor suppressor is a key component of the multistep evolution of most cancers. Links between the NF-kappaB and p53 pathways are under intense investigation. In this study, we show that the receptor interacting protein 1 (RIP1), a central component of the NF-kappaB signaling network, negatively regulates p53 tumor suppressor signaling.
