About the Lab
Professor Sung Sam Paik's research lab specializes in translational pathology and molecular oncology, with a focus on identifying novel biomarkers and tumor suppressor molecules in gastrointestinal and soft tissue neoplasms. The lab investigates the clinicopathological significance of cell surface markers such as CD47, CADM4, and CD markers in colorectal adenocarcinoma and other malignancies, aiming to correlate their expression with tumor behavior, progression, and patient outcomes. Key research directions include the immunohistochemical characterization of rare tumors—such as microcystic meningioma and tracheal pleomorphic adenoma—and the role of adhesion molecules and immune-related proteins in tumorigenesis and metastasis.

15CD markers were related to invasiveness and differentiation of colorectal adenocarcinoma. However, CD expression was not closely related to survival.
Uterine leiomyoma with massive lymphoid infiltration is a rare and unusual pathological finding. Only 13 cases have been reported in English literature. A case of uterine leiomyoma showing massive lymphoid infiltration in a 45-year-old woman is described. The tumor was relatively soft compared with usual leiomyomas. Microscopically, the tumor showed the typical features of leiomyoma with moderate to severe lymphocytic infiltrate consisting of mature lymphocytes, a few plasma cells and occasional
AIMS: Cell adhesion molecule 4 (CADM4) is a novel tumour suppressor. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between its expression and the expression of E-cadherin and Ki-67 in colorectal adenocarcinomas, as well as its effect on patient survival. METHODS: We evaluated CADM4 expression in tissue microarrays of 513 colorectal adenocarcinomas by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: CADM4 was highly expressed in 210 of the 513 colorectal adenocarcinomas; expression was reduced in 18
Microcystic meningioma is a distinct morphological variant of meningioma, characterized by loose texture and microcysts with formation of large extracellular spaces containing edematous fluid. The tumor cells have stellate and vacuolated cytoplasm with long cytoplasmic processes. We experienced a case of typical microcystic meningioma occurring in the falx cerebri adjacent to the left superior parasagittal sinus in a 41-year-old man. The tumor showed the typical histologic features with a few ne
CD47, a transmembrane protein, is widely overexpressed on the tumor cell surface. However, the prognostic significance of CD47 expression in colorectal adenocarcinoma (CRA) has not yet been clarified. Here, we investigated the clinicopathologic significance of CD47 expression in CRA. CD47 expression was evaluated via immunohistochemical analysis of microarray sections of 328 CRA tissues. CD47 expression was observed in 53 (16.2%) of the 328 CRA tissues, and positive expression was associated wit
A case of salivary gland type pleomorphic adenoma of the trachea in a 48-year-old woman is presented. Pleomorphic adenoma is extremely rare in the trachea. The behavior of this tumor in the trachea appears to be similar to its counterpart in other sites and distinctly different from the more frequently encountered epithelial tumors.
The gastrointestinal stromal tumor is the most common mesenchymal neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract. The gastrointestinal stromal tumor universally expresses KIT and DOG-1 and frequently harbors oncogenic mutations in the KIT gene. While the gastrointestinal stromal tumor usually arises in the alimentary tract, it is rarely found in the extragastrointestinal area. When it is, it is called an extragastrointestinal stromal tumor. Although the pathogenesis, prognostic factors and outcomes of g
Poorly differentiated ("insular") carcinoma of the thyroid shares insular, trabecular, and solid histological patterns that are different from those of papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic varieties. This tumor is situated morphologically and biologically in the intermediate position between the well differentiated (papillary and follicular) and the totally undifferentiated (anaplastic) thyroid tumors. We report two cases of insular carcinoma of the thyroid, occurring in 39-year-old
The role of dual-specificity protein phosphatase 4 (DUSP4) appears to vary with the type of malignant tumors and is still controversial. The purpose of our study was to clarify the exact role of DUSP4 expression in colorectal adenocarcinoma. We constructed tissue microarrays and investigated DUSP4 expression by immunohistochemistry. DUSP4 was more frequently expressed in adenocarcinomas and lymph node/distant metastases compared to that in normal colorectal tissues and tubular adenomas (P < 0.00
