About the Lab
Professor Sung Yung Park's research lab focuses on interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of biomedical engineering, nanomaterials, and clinical health outcomes. The lab investigates the impact of early-life cardiovascular risk factors—such as hypertension and obesity—on long-term disease outcomes in young adults, while also developing advanced radiation therapy planning tools using novel dose homogeneity metrics. In parallel, the lab explores the optical and structural properties of DNA-templated gold nanoparticle assemblies, combining experimental techniques with theoretical modeling to understand nanoscale self-assembly. These diverse research directions reflect a strong commitment to both clinical translation and fundamental nanoscience.

15Among Korean young adults, stage 1 and stage 2 hypertension, compared with normal blood pressure, were associated with increased risk of subsequent cardiovascular disease events. The goal of the present study was to develop a new dose-volume histogram (DVH)- based homogeneity index for effectively evaluating the dose homogeneity of intensity-modulated radiotherapy plans. The new index, called the sigma-index ("S-index") is defined as the standard deviation of the normalized differential DVH curve.
