About the Lab
Professor Sungcheol Kim's research lab specializes in post-foundational discourse theory, with a focus on populism, hegemony, and the discursive construction of authoritarianism in contemporary European politics. The lab examines how political movements in countries such as Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Germany articulate power through populist and non-populist discursive logics, particularly in relation to nationalism, institutionalism, and social welfarism. It also engages critically with theoretical frameworks from the Essex School of discourse analysis, exploring the normative and ideological dimensions of populism and its intersections with identity, representation, and social order.

15Drawing on Ernesto Laclau’s theory of discourse, hegemony, and populism, this paper analyses the development of the discourses of Fidesz in Hungary and Law and Justice (PiS) in Poland from opposition to power with a focus on how authoritarianism is articulated, especially in relation to populism. The post-foundational discourse analysis finds that populism takes on an authoritarian expression only in certain discursive combinations, mostly with nationalism, while authoritarianism follows a range
This paper draws on Laclau’s theory of discourse, hegemony, and populism to analyse competing forms of populism in the Czech Republic within the discursive context of ‘post-November transformation’ as well as in relation to hegemonic struggles over the construction of social order. It is argued that the discourses of Public Affairs (VV), ANO, Dawn of Direct Democracy, and Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) all feature a populist opposition between the ‘people’ or ‘citizens’ on the one hand and ‘
Abstract This paper seeks to draw on the tools of Ernesto Laclau’s theory of discourse, hegemony and populism as well as recent Essex School work on populism to examine the discourse of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and, in the process, come closer to a more systematic understanding of nature and limits of right-wing populism as well as the interplay and distinction between populist and non-populist discursive logics more generally. The paper situates itself in the context of existing Essex
특히 Allen의 "Korean Tales : Being a collection of stories translated from the Korean folk lore"(1889), Hulbert의 "Omjee The Wizard-Korean Folk Stories"(1925)를 논의의 중심으로 삼는다. 또한 Aston과 Hulbert가 한국 문학에 대해 비평한 'On Corean popular literature'(1890)와 "The Passing of Korea"(1906)도 분석의 대상으로 삼는다. 결론을 먼저 밝히면, Allen의 "Korean Tales"는 서양에 처음 소개되는 작품집으로서의 번역 태도를 드러내고 있으며, Aston은 한글 소설 수집을 통해 한글
This article sets out to examine two claims that have increasingly come to define the dividing lines between the ideational and the post-foundational discursive approaches to populism: namely, that the former is moralistic and the latter is normative in orientation. The article considers the conceptual merits of both critiques while using them to further examine some of the implicit assumptions and pitfalls within Cas Mudde’s and Ernesto Laclau’s paradigmatic conceptualizations of populism. This paper sets out to think the relationship between horizontality and verticality from the perspective of post-foundational discourse theory, taking as a starting point the diachronic development from Laclau’s and Mouffe’s joint work on radical democracy to Laclau’s theory of populism. The argument here is that the shift in conceptual terrain from the autonomy of ‘democratic struggles’ to the representative function of ‘empty’ popular signifiers points to deeper shifts and slippages – especial
This paper examines three attempts to build ‘party unions’ of the far right in Western Europe: the Vlaams Belang’s creation of its own trade union organization in 2011, which folded after failing to develop a meaningful membership base; the Front National’s creation of its own sectoral trade unions in the mid-1990s, which were disbanded following a series of court rulings; and the distinctive case of Zentrum Automobil as a pre-existing sector-specific workplace group with far-right roots founded
Abstract In taking stock of the ruling Fidesz party's project of ‘illiberal democracy’ in Hungary, this article first develops considerations based on Claude Lefort's democratic theory for critiquing ‘illiberal democracy’ and post‐democracy alike, situating the former in an early 2010s post‐democratic moment characterised by the emergence of a neoliberal crisis management regime in the Eurozone. ‘Illiberal democracy’ and ‘market‐conforming democracy’ are both problematic from this standpoint ins
Abstract This paper examines varieties of anti-populist party politics from left to right that emerged against the backdrop of the much-discussed “populist moment” of the mid- to late 2010s in Europe. Situating the analysis in the special issue’s interest in an “anti-populist moment” that discursively co-constituted this “populist moment,” the paper keys in on the anti-populist campaign discourses of three political parties that took centre stage in the 2017 national parliamentary elections in t
