15As the smart phone devices gain popularity, companies no longer consider mobile application marketing as an auxiliary marketing tactic. The branded mobile application (branded app) becomes an important part of marketing strategies. This study is an attempt to investigate antecedents of the use intention of the branded app from the perspective of TAM (Technology Acceptance Model). This study takes a macro perspective in explaining the adoption process by incorporating a set of new, yet promising
This study of William Morris’s News from Nowhere perceives artificiality as the main target of his social criticism in the novel. Artificiality, according to him, permeates every area of Victorian society: gender relations, education system, motherhood, commerce, manufacture, and most significantly, artistic practices. Morris believes that the artificial nature of capitalist society (its drive for mass production, increasing mechanization, the alienation of labor) inhibits artistic creativity an
This study adopts a comparative literary approach to two well-known poems composed in Korean and English, respectively: “Tugyŏn” (The cuckoo) by Kim Yŏngnang (金永郞) and “Ode to a Nightingale” by the English Romantic poet John Keats. In both poems the solitary speaker is responding to the bird’s song, but an intertextual reading of the two works reveals far more than this obvious similarity in the ways that deepen our understanding of their texts. Densely intertextual in itself, the text of each p
This essay examines Shelley’s Prometheus Unbound with close attention to his view of language as presented in the drama. Here Shelley emphasizes the constitutive role of language in the formation of thought—an idea of language that has been termed “Promethean” in Shelley criticism. Promethean speech has the performative capacity for love, which is the core of Shelleyan morality and whose embodiment in the drama is Asia, Prometheus’s lover. Shelley believes that only the power of love, rather tha
Writers from the Romantic period embraced Locke’s principle of linguistic arbitrariness as they reacted to the threat to their literary authority posed by the standardizers of English such as Samuel Johnson. Their texts articulate a desire to maximize the potential for authorial freedom that Locke’s theory of language offers. By exploiting arbitrary properties of language, writers hoped to transcend the linguistic limits imposed by the standardizers and thus to confirm their status as creative p
Like many of his contemporaries, John Keats is known for his skeptical attitude toward organized religion and Christian doctrine. In a famous letter sent to his brother and sister-in-law, George an...
This paper investigates Coleridge’s theory of the symbol, which can be understood to be the consummation of his linguistic, philosophical, and religious thinking. The paper applies modern speculation about ‘things’ to studying Coleridge’s uniting of words and things in the symbol. His conception of ‘words-as-things’ was an attempt to bridge the widening gap between words and the world in his day. This article gives a particular focus on his great poem “Frost at Midnight,” in which clouds as symb
