About the Lab

Professor Sungji Park's research lab specializes in cardiovascular imaging and risk stratification, with a focus on echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), and hemodynamic assessment in patients with valvular heart disease. The lab investigates the prognostic value of biomarkers such as NT-proBNP and TTE, as well as the role of imaging in guiding timing of aortic valve replacement in asymptomatic and low-gradient aortic stenosis. A key research direction involves identifying clinical predictors of postpartum hypertension in women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, highlighting maternal cardiovascular outcomes. The lab also explores the utility of non-invasive imaging in detecting early subclinical cardiac changes, particularly in aortic stenosis and severe aortic regurgitation.

BACKGROUND: The morbidity and mortality of patients with functional mitral regurgitation (MR) remain high, but no pharmacological therapy has been proven effective. The hypothesis of this study was that sacubitril/valsartan would be superior to valsartan alone in improving functional MR via dual inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system and neprilysin. METHODS: In this double-blind trial, we randomly assigned 118 patients with heart failure with chronic functional MR secondary to left ventricul

TTE was modestly predictive of perioperative cardiovascular events but was not superior to NT-proBNP. Moreover, it did not have incremental value to the clinically determined risk. The results of our study did not support the use of routine echocardiography before noncardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: The morbidity and mortality rates of patients with heart failure (HF) and functional mitral regurgitation (MR) remain substantial despite guideline-directed medical therapy for HF. We evaluated the efficacy of ertugliflozin for reduction of functional MR associated with HF with mild to moderately reduced ejection fraction. METHODS: The EFFORT trial (Ertugliflozin for Functional Mitral Regurgitation) was a multicenter, double-blind, randomized trial to examine the hypothesis that the

BACKGROUND: Miyoshi myopathy (MM) is an autosomal recessive distal myopathy characterized by early adult onset. Cardiomyopathy is a major clinical manifestation in other muscular dystrophies and an important prognostic factor. Although dysferlin is highly expressed in cardiac muscle, the effect of dysferlin deficiency in cardiac muscle has not been studied. We hypothesized that early myocardial dysfunction could be detected by 2D strain echocardiography and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) card

SJR Q3MedicineOA

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) is one of the most important lethal complications in pregnant mothers. It is also associated with the subsequent development of chronic hypertension. The objective of this study was to identify the clinical risk factors of postpartum chronic hypertension in women diagnosed with HDP.Six hundred patients as HDP, who diagnosed and followed-up at least 6 month after delivery, were included in the study. We divided the included subjects in 2 groups based on t

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess contractile reserve (CR) in patients with severe aortic regurgitation (AR), and potential clinical applications of CR in minimally symptomatic patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: Symptom-limited treadmill exercise echocardiography was performed in 58 asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic patients with chronic severe AR (male 69%, 50±14 years). Patients with increased ejection fraction (EF) after exercise were denoted as having CR (+) and those without incr
