Professor Sung-Joon Lee's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic diseases, particularly obesity and type 2 diabetes, with an emphasis on natural bioactive compounds and gut-microbiota interactions. The lab investigates how dietary components—such as fermented green tea, carotenoids, ursolic acid, taurine, and odorant ligands—modulate lipid metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and gut hormone secretion. A key research direction involves the role of ectopic olfactory receptors and gut barrier function in regulating energy homeostasis. The lab integrates in vivo models, cell signaling studies, and molecular analyses to identify novel therapeutic targets for metabolic disorders.

We have determined that the multidrug and toxic compound extrusion transporter-1 (MATE1) is a membrane transporter for flavonoids and has a high affinity for quercetin.
