About the Lab
Professor Sunyoung Kim's research lab focuses on aging-related health disparities, particularly sarcopenia and osteoporosis in the elderly Korean population. The lab investigates simple, accessible biomarkers—such as calf circumference and muscle mass index—for early detection and risk prediction of physical frailty and bone health deterioration. Additionally, the lab explores the application of mobile health (mHealth) technologies in low- and middle-income countries, emphasizing theory-based design and spatial patterns of implementation to improve global health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Recently there has been dramatic increase in the use of mobile technologies for health (m-Health) in both high and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, little is known whether m-Health interventions in LMICs are based on relevant theories critical for effective implementation of such interventions. This review aimed to systematically identify m-Health studies on health behavioral changes in LMICs and to examine how each study applied behavior change theories. MATERIALS
The purpose of this study was to predict osteoporosis risk as decreasing muscle mass and to declare the cut-off value of low muscle mass in an elderly Korean population. This study was based on data from the 2008-2010 Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Surveys (KNHANES). The subjects included 1,308 men and 1,171 women over 65 yr. Bone mineral density (BMD) and appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM) were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and appendicular skeletal musc
Background: The purpose of this study was to explore the optimal cut-off point of calf circumference (CC) as a simple proxy marker of appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) and sarcopenia in the Korean elderly and to test the criterion-related validity of CC by analyzing its relationships with the physical function. Methods: The participants were 657 adults aged 70 to 84 years who had completed both dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and physical function test in the first baseline year of
BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth), a term used for healthcare delivery via mobile devices, has gained attention as an innovative technology for better access to healthcare and support for performance of health workers in the global health context. Despite large expansion of mHealth across sub-Saharan Africa, regional collaboration for scale-up has not made progress since last decade. METHODS: As a groundwork for strategic planning for regional collaboration, the study attempted to identify spa
Choose your catalyst wisely: Depending on the position of the cyclopropyl substituent on the bicyclo[4.1.0]hept-2-ene substrate, a different rhodium complex was used to catalyze the title reaction, which leads to bicyclic dienones in reasonable to excellent yields (see scheme). The products contain a highly substituted seven-membered ring with useful functionality for further manipulation. R1=H, Me; R2=H, Me, Ph; R3=Me, Et; X=NR, O.
Cinnamomum cassia is a well-known traditional medicine for improvement of blood circulation. An extract of this plant showed both platelet anti-aggregation and blood anti-coagulation effects in preliminary testing. Among the 13 compounds obtained from this plant, eugenol (2), amygdalactone (4), cinnamic alcohol (5), 2-hydroxycinnamaldehyde (7), 2-methoxycinnamaldehyde (8), and coniferaldehyde (9) showed 1.5-73-fold greater inhibitory effects than acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on arachidonic acid (A
Enyne-enyne-o: Tandem cycloisomerization of dienynes catalyzed by platinum dichloride and subsequent Cope rearrangement affords bicyclic rings (see scheme; Z=NTs, O, CH2), such as bicyclo[3.2.2]nonadienes 1 or tetrahydrocyclohepta[c]pyrans and -pyridines 2, in high yields.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to describe a method that explicitly considers both a health-care programmes cost-effectiveness and its affordability. For illustration, we apply the method to the programme to vaccinate infants against hepatitis B in the Gambia. METHODS: We synthesized selected data and developed a computer-based model from the societal and payer perspectives to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of routine infant vaccination against hepatitis B in the Gambia compared with no vaccination.
