About the Lab

Professor Tae Han Kim's research lab focuses on emergency medicine and prehospital care, with a strong emphasis on improving outcomes in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest through evidence-based protocols such as the Basic Life Support Termination of Resuscitation (BLS TOR) rule. The lab also investigates innovative techniques in trauma and disaster medicine, including life-saving interventions under personal protective equipment during chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) incidents. Additionally, the lab explores sustainable energy solutions through the development and characterization of biofuels from organic waste, such as spent coffee grounds and pine sawdust. These diverse research directions reflect a commitment to both clinical emergency care innovation and environmental sustainability.

We validated the basic life support termination of resuscitation (BLS TOR) rule retrospectively using Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) data of metropolitan emergency medical service (EMS) in Korea. We also tested it by investigating the scene time interval for supplementing the BLS TOR rule. OHCA database of Seoul (January 2011 to December 2012) was used, which is composed of ambulance data and hospital medical record review. EMS-treated OHCA and 19 yr or older victims were enrolled, after

SJR Q2SIMULATIONOA

Prompt live-saving interventions, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), intravenous cannulation (IVC), and endotracheal intubation (ETI), are important for severely injured victims of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) disasters. Interventions sometime have to be performed by emergency medical service (EMS) personnel with personal protective equipment (PPE) worn in warm zones. We designed a randomized crossover simulation aimed to compare the performance of life-saving

Solid Fuel Characteristics of Pellets Comprising Spent Coffee Grounds and Wood Powder

SJR Q1EnergiesOA

To help mitigate the effects of global warming and fossil fuel depletion caused by human use of fossil fuels, solid fuel pellets were developed from a mixture of spent coffee grounds (SCG) and pine sawdust (PS). The feasibility of SCG-PS pellets as biofuel was also verified by evaluating its fuel quality. An increase in the proportion of SCG in the pellet led to an increase in its calorific value, owing to the high C, H, and oil contents, and increases in the ash and S contents, owing to the hig
