About the Lab

Professor Taehwan Kim's research lab focuses on the immunological and molecular mechanisms underlying chronic inflammatory diseases, particularly ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and reactive arthritis. The lab investigates the interplay between human leukocyte antigen B27 (HLA-B27), microbial antigens, and host immune responses, aiming to uncover pathogenic pathways driving chronic inflammation and pathological bone formation. Additional research directions include identifying novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets—such as alkaline phosphatase and cartilage turnover markers—for disease activity and progression in AS, as well as exploring the clinical potential of natural compounds like tissue-cultured mountain ginseng in treating related conditions such as erectile dysfunction. The lab integrates translational immunology, molecular tracing techniques, and clinical trials to advance precision medicine approaches in autoimmune and metabolic disorders.
