About the Lab
Professor Wan Beom Park's research lab specializes in infectious disease epidemiology, with a strong focus on viral pathogenesis, antimicrobial resistance, and post-infection outcomes. The lab investigates emerging viral infections such as SARS-CoV-2 and MERS-CoV, examining clinical progression, treatment efficacy, and long-term pulmonary and radiological sequelae in survivors. Their work also includes antimicrobial therapy evaluation, particularly in Staphylococcus aureus infections, with comparative studies on antibiotic effectiveness and resistance patterns.

Novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is found to cause a large outbreak started from Wuhan since December 2019 in China and SARS-CoV-2 infections have been reported with epidemiological linkage to China in 25 countries until now. We isolated SARS-CoV-2 from the oropharyngeal sample obtained from the patient with the first laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in Korea. Cytopathic effects of SARS-CoV-2 in the Vero cell cultures were confluent 3 days after the first blind passage of the sample. Coro
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether adherence to clinic visits early after initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is predictive of long-term clinical outcome. DESIGN: Observational cohort study. SETTING: A tertiary referral hospital. SUBJECTS: A total of 387 adult HIV patients who were followed for at least 1 year after initiation of HAART between January 1998 and December 2004. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: The effect of 1-year adherence to clinic visits on the occurrence of new AI
About 20% of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) isolates have a substantial inoculum effect with cefazolin, suggesting that cefazolin treatment may be associated with clinical failure for serious MSSA infections. There are no well-matched controlled studies comparing cefazolin with nafcillin for the treatment of MSSA bacteremia. A retrospective propensity-score-matched case-control study was performed from 2004 to 2009 in a tertiary care hospital where nafcillin was unavailable
This nationwide, prospective cohort study evaluated pulmonary function and radiological sequelae according to infection severity in 73 survivors from the 2015 Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) outbreak in Korea. Patients with severe pneumonia in MERS-coronavirus infection had more impaired pulmonary function than those with no or mild pneumonia at the 1-year follow-up, which was compatible with the radiological sequelae. Severe pneumonia significantly impairs pulmonary function and makes l

Human leukocyte antigen allele (HLA)-B*5701 is associated with abacavir hypersensitivity. However, the carriage rate of HLA-B*5701 has rarely been studied in Asians. In 534 Korean patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection, HLA-B*5701 status was determined by polymerase chain reaction with HLA-B*5701-specific primers. No patients had the HLA-B*5701 allele (95% confidence interval, 0%-0.7%). This explains the paucity of immunologically confirmed cases of abacavir hypersensitivity in Kor
infections (8,9). This rate was even in the lower range of values found among HIV-infected heterosexual persons in industrialized countries (9%-27%) (2). Our results therefore suggest that the high seroprevalence rates of HIV and HCV in Africa will not necessarily result in a high prevalence of HIV/HCV coinfection.
Although the incidence of non-Aspergillus filamentous fungal infections has increased, there is little data regarding the correlation between the results of histologic analysis and those of microbiologic culture in clinical practice. We investigated the results of fungal cultures inoculated with tissue specimens that had been found to have fungal hyphae on histologic examination at a university-affiliated tertiary care hospital. Culture studies were requested for microbiologic diagnosis for 122
Among prospectively enrolled adult patients with cancer receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs; n = 46) or cytotoxic agents (n = 90), seroprotection and seroconversion rates after seasonal quadrivalent influenza vaccinations were higher with ICI than with cytotoxic chemotherapy. These results support annual influenza vaccinations for cancer patients receiving ICIs. Clinical Trials Registration clinicaltrials.gov (NCT03590808).
BACKGROUND: High prevalence of severe atazanavir-associated hyperbilirubinemia in Asians with low prevalence of the UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT)1A1*28 polymorphism suggests the importance of genetic factors other than UGT1A1*28 for atazanavir-associated hyperbilirubinemia in these populations. METHODS: Serum bilirubin levels were measured in 129 Korean human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients 3 months after initiation of atazanavir (400 mg per day) with good adherence to medication. T
BACKGROUND: Cytopenia occurs frequently during cytotoxic chemotherapy. Little is known about the optimal timing of influenza vaccination for patients receiving chemotherapy. This study compared the immunogenicity of an influenza vaccine administered concurrently with chemotherapy (day 1) and within the cytopenic period (day 11) during 3-week cytotoxic chemotherapy cycles. METHODS: Adult patients with solid cancer undergoing scheduled 3-week cytotoxic chemotherapy were randomly assigned to receiv
OSCE score from patient encounters did not reflect the clinical reasoning abilities of the medical students in this study. The evaluation of medical students' clinical reasoning abilities through OSCE should be strengthened.
