About the Lab
Professor Woo-jeong Kim's research lab focuses on the intersection of aging, mental health, and neurological disorders, with a strong emphasis on identifying modifiable risk factors for cognitive and sleep-related conditions in older adults. The lab investigates the impact of psychological traits such as alexithymia on psychiatric disorders like OCD, explores the neurobiological underpinnings of sleep disturbance and depression in shift workers using neuroimaging, and examines the role of social networks in protecting cognitive function across gender. The lab also studies metabolic and systemic factors—such as glycemic status and chronic disease—influencing dementia risk, particularly in community-dwelling elderly populations.

Previous studies have indicated that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is associated with alexithymic traits. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the difference of alexithymia in OCD patients and healthy controls. We found that sex, education, chronic disease, and depression independently increase the risk of insomnia of the elderly in a Korean rural community. To overcome the elderly's insomnia, interventions should target modifiable factors such as depression. To promote active aging, longitudinal studies of factors associated with insomnia among the elderly should be performed in different regions and communities.
