About the Lab
Professor Woo-kyung Choi's research lab specializes in neonatal and perinatal medicine, with a strong focus on improving outcomes for high-risk and extremely low birth weight infants. The lab investigates early neurodevelopmental assessment, biomarkers for acute kidney injury (such as NGAL), and complications related to neonatal critical care, including malpositioned umbilical venous catheters. Research also extends to maternal-fetal health, particularly perinatal outcomes in preterm twin versus singleton pregnancies. The lab integrates clinical research with practical healthcare system development, including the creation of occupational standards for laboratory safety management.

Objective: Preterm births in the late preterm period comprise more than half of all preterm births. However, perinatal outcome evaluation between singleton and multiple pregnancies is limited. This study aimed to compare the perinatal outcomes of preterm pre-labor rupture of membranes (PPROM) between twin and singleton pregnancies at 34 weeks to 36 weeks and 6 days. Methods: This retrospective case-control study included women with preterm births at the Tertiary Hospital between July 2006 and De
Purpose: Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) has been identified as an early marker of acute kidney injury (AKI). This study was designed to evaluate the clinical utility of the rapid plasma NGAL assay for diagnosing AKI in critically ill newborn infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Methods: The medical records of 178 critically ill newborn infants >34 weeks of gestational age who underwent plasma NGAL measurement during the first week of life in the Korea University
Umbilical venous catheters (UVCs) are frequently used in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants for intravenous access. It is important to position correctly to prevent complications, including arrhythmia, pleural effusion, pericardial effusion, and cardiac tamponade. Pericardial effusion remains asymptomatic in the early stages and cardiac tamponade suddenly appears as a cardiac arrest. The authors report a case of successful management of malpositioned UVC-related cardiac tamponade in an EL
Trans-placental neonatal human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is common in Africa; however, it is not yet reported in the Republic of Korea. With the increasing incidence of HIV infection, especially in the reproductive age group, the risk of the vertical transmission of HIV is also increasing. We report the first case of HIV infection acquired in-utero in a newborn in Korea. The baby is growing well with normal development.
Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is the leading cause of neonatal respiratory morbidity and mortality. Advancements in neonatal care, along with extended insurance coverage, have resulted in increased utilization of surfactant replacement therapy (SRT) for RDS. This has contributed to a decrease in neonatal mortality. The primary mode of respiratory support in infants with RDS has dramatically changed over the last decades, transitioning from invasive to noninvasive support. Therefore, less i
Objectives: This study compared the nutritional intakes of early and late preterm infants in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and at home. The dietary problems and the need for community care services for premature infants were further investigated. Methods: This is a cross-sectional and descriptive study on 125 preterm infants and their parents (Early preterm n = 70, Late preterm n = 55). The data were collected by surveying the parents of preterm infants and from hospital medical records.
Purpose: To identify the significance of the 12-month developmental assessment in high-risk neonates by comparing their 12 month and later childhood...
Objective: The different patterns of ductal shunt flow by Doppler echocardiography are useful for the diagnosis and prediction of risk of hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), especially growing or pulsatile patterns. We examined whether the ductal flow patterns might represent a reliable guide for PDA management in preterm infants with respiratory distress, using a comparison of traditional echocardiographic parameters. Methods: Thirty-one preterm infants with gestational
Purpose: This study was performed to determine the clinical features of full-term infants with hypoxemia detected by pulse oximetry and to establish the diagnosis of critical congenital heart disease (CCHD). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of neonates who had been admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit within 2 weeks of birth at Korea University Ansan Hospital between January 2013 and October 2017 (n=450). We classified these neonates based on the presence of hypox

Objective: We investigated the usefulness of the plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels measured 24 hours after the last ibuprofen dose in predicting the need for an additional dose to prevent the recurrence of symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) following completion of the planned pharmacological treatment. Methods: Seventy-one preterm infants with hemodynamically significant (hs) PDA, whose plasma BNP levels were measured just before and 24 hours after the last ibuprofen dose we
