About the Lab
Professor Woo Nam's research lab specializes in oral and maxillofacial surgery, with a strong focus on reconstructive surgery using advanced biomaterials and 3D printing technologies. The lab investigates innovative applications of tissue engineering, including patient-specific scaffolds made from PCL/β-TCP for mandibular reconstruction, and explores the use of microvascular free flaps such as the fibula free flap in complex craniofacial defects. Additionally, the lab examines systemic inflammatory markers as prognostic indicators in oral squamous cell carcinoma and investigates rare malignancies like intraosseous malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, emphasizing precision surgical planning and improved outcomes in complex head and neck reconstructions.

15BACKGROUND: Artemisinin is of special biological interest because of its outstanding antimalarial activity. Recently, it was reported that artemisinin has antitumor activity. Its derivatives, artesunate, arteether, and artemeter, also have antitumor activity against melanoma, breast, ovarian, prostate, CNS, and renal cancer cell lines. Recently, monomer, dimer, and trimer derivatives were synthesized from deoxoartemisinin, and the dimers and the trimers were found to have much more potent antitu
It has been demonstrated that development of three-dimensional printing technology has supported the researchers and surgeons to apply the bone tissue engineering to the oromandibular reconstruction. In this study, poly caprolactone/beta tricalcium phosphate (PCL/β-TCP) scaffolds were fabricated by multi-head deposition system. The feasibility of the three-dimensionally (3D) -printed PCL/β-TCP scaffolds for mandibular reconstruction was examined on critical-sized defect of canine mandible. The s
It has been recognized that systemic inflammatory markers (SIMs) are associated with patient survival in various types of cancer. This study aimed to determine the optimal cut-off values, and to evaluate the prognostic performance of SIMs for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) within the framework of the American Joint Committee of Cancer (AJCC) cancer staging manual, 8th edition. Records were collected for a total 291 patients who had had a peripheral blood test within 1 week prior to surgery
BACKGROUND: Condylar dislocation can arise as a complication in patients who required mandibular and/or condylar reconstruction and were operated on with fibula free flap (FFF) using surgical guides designed using simulation surgery. Surgeons should be aware of the complications in these present cases when planning and performing reconstructions as well as predicting prognoses. CASES PRESENTATION: Two cases showed condylar dislocation in mandibular reconstruction using a FFF fixed with a reconst
SCAIF exhibited minimal anatomic variations and short learning curve of surgical techniques, which might be valuable reconstruction modality for beginning surgeon. And it can be beneficial option for the patients with vessel-depleted neck, medically compromised status for lengthened general anesthesia and failed free tissue transfer.
Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST) is a rare mesenchymal tumour which usually presents high grade malignancy. We report an atypical case of intraosseous malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour on mandible in a 36-year-old male. Patient presented with an incidentally discovered radiolucency on the left anterior mandible and did not complain of any symptoms. Panoramic radiograph and computed tomography showed enlargement of inferior alveolar nerve canal, thinning of the cortex and c
BACKGROUND: The conventional transcervical resection for submandibular gland disease has some risks and an unsatisfactory cosmetic result. Recently, robot-assisted surgery has been developed as a plausible substitute for conventional surgery which provides an excellent cosmetic outcome. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors performed robot-assisted sialadenectomy via modified facelift incision using the da Vinci Xi surgical system (Intuitive Surgical Inc., CA, USA) with two endowrist arms (monopolar cu
Herniation after harvesting of deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) flap is a known but not a common complication. It occurs about 2.8 to 9 % according to the literatures and can proceed to a more severe complication such as bowel obstruction. There are several factors that exacerbate the risk: surgical factors, operator factor, and patient factors. Surgical factors include large anatomical defect and denervation of related muscles. Operator factor stands for unpunctual suture technique. Patient
Abstract. Regional frequency analysis is widely used to estimate more reliable quantiles of extreme hydro-meteorological events. The stationarity of data is required for its application. This assumption tends to be violated due to climate change. In this paper, four nonstationary index flood models were used to analyze the nonstationary regional data. Monte Carlo simulation was used to evaluate the performances of these models for the generalized extreme value distribution with linearly time var
We recently achieved favorable results in 3 pediatric patients with mandibular osteosarcomas that were treated at our hospital, including with immediate reconstructive surgery performed after tumor resection. Based on a literature review and practical investigation, we discuss the considerations for mandibular reconstruction after malignant lesions are removed from the mandible in children. Mandibular reconstruction for pediatric patients requires an understanding of the changes in bone and soft
