About the Lab
Professor Yaeri Kim's research lab focuses on media, identity, and digital culture, with a particular emphasis on how social identity, threat perception, and transnational media flows shape consumer behavior and cultural discourse. The lab investigates the psychological and sociocultural dynamics behind electronic word-of-mouth, immersive media experiences, and the globalization of local television content. Key research directions include identity negotiation in digital platforms, the aesthetic experience of the sublime in video games, and the cultural reconfiguration of foreign media in local contexts. The lab integrates social psychology, media studies, and cultural analysis to explore the interplay between identity, technology, and mediated communication.

15In this research, we explore the role of social identity and threats to social identity on consumers’ judgment and behavioural intention about electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) on Facebook. Study 1 shows that sharing social identity with a Facebook friend increases perceptions of usefulness and behavioural intention to adopt eWOM. However, when a threat to social identity is posed, these positive effects are eliminated. Study 2 reveals an opposite condition wherein a threat to social identity resu
This article examines 2018 South Korean historical drama Mr. Sunshine as an example showcasing the impact of global streaming platforms on local television production. As a locally produced show targeting the international market and later purchased by Netflix, Mr. Sunshine offers an interesting case study of the local industry’s response to changes brought about by global streaming services. This article analyzes how the creators’ acute awareness of the threats and opportunities posed by the in
This article examines the ways in which South Korean media redefined and reevaluated American television between 2006 and 2008, when the dominance of domestic series in entertainment television was purportedly challenged by the resurging popularity of American shows. By analyzing traditional and digital newspaper articles published on this phenomenon, this article demonstrates how the local media produced and disseminated a coherent discourse that transformed American television series into the
This article examines the experience of the sublime engendered by video games and the function of immersion and interactivity in producing this effect. A close inspection of the history of the sublime as an aesthetic principle and related cultural practices reveals that the elements of immersion, interactivity, and virtuality were already integral to Burke’s seminal conceptualization, as well as in architecture and visual media, before the emergence of digital media. The techniques and technolog

Although the recent increase in cross-border movements of people and media contents has significantly impacted popular imagination in South Korea, few South Korean films have explored local women's experiences of globalization. Take Care of My Cat (Goyangireul butakhae, Jeong Jae-eun, (2001) 2004. Goyangireul butakhae/Take Care of My Cat. DVD. New York: Kino Lorber Films) by the independent woman filmmaker Jeong Jae-eun is a rare example that focuses on unprivileged local women's experiences, de

This article proposes the actor-network theory (ANT) as a framework to analyze the narrative experience of games-as-a-service (GaaS) with a focus on gacha games. Although narrative is central to both player enjoyment and marketing strategies in gacha games, it remains theoretically neglected because its dispersed and amorphous narrative experience is incompatible with traditional models that posit the narrative text as a unified, self-contained entity. Drawing on Law’s conceptualization of ANT a
This paper explores the idealized image of K-pop in KPop Demon Hunters (2025), an animated musical film that became an unexpected global phenomenon. Drawing on feminist media studies, this research conducts a close textual analysis to examine how the film constructs a utopian reality where female stars possess full agency while simultaneously retaining their glamour and resisting sexual objectification. As a text bridging fan reception and mainstream media production, KPop Demon Hunters offers u
