About the Lab

Professor Yewon Kim's research lab focuses on interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of biomedical engineering, clinical health analytics, and behavioral finance. The lab investigates clinical outcomes in ocular surface diseases, particularly dry eye disease, under environmental stressors like ozone exposure, while also exploring the impact of corporate governance and information transparency on financial market reactions. A key research direction involves leveraging advanced image processing and deep learning techniques to automate the analysis of complex biological and physiological data, such as bubble dynamics in multiphase flows and ocular surface imaging. The lab further examines how managerial competence and information environments influence investor behavior and capital market efficiency.

Deep learning-based automated and universal bubble detection and mask extraction in complex two-phase flows
Yewon Kim, Hyungmin Park
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Abstract While investigating multiphase flows experimentally, the spatiotemporal variation in the interfacial shape between different phases must be measured to analyze the transport phenomena. For this, numerous image processing techniques have been proposed, showing good performance. However, they require trial-and-error optimization of thresholding parameters, which are not universal for all experimental conditions; thus, their accuracy is highly dependent on human experience, and the overall

Short-Term Effects of Ground-Level Ozone in Patients With Dry Eye Disease: A Prospective Clinical Study
Yewon Kim, Hae Jung Paik, Mee Kum Kim, Yoon‐Hyeong Choi, Dong Hyun Kim
SJR Q1Cornea

PURPOSE: To investigate changes in the clinical features of patients with dry eye disease (DED) according to short-term outdoor ground-level ozone exposure. METHODS: This prospective observational study included patients with DED who were treated with the same topical drugs (0.05% cyclosporine or 3% diquafosol) and visited the hospital twice at 2-month intervals. Patients who showed a short tear film breakup time and positive ocular surface staining were assigned to the diquafosol and cyclospori

Stock Price Crash and Investors’ Response to Earnings Announcements
Yewon Kim, Yoojin Shin, Eugenia Y. Lee
SJR Q4Korean Accounting Review

SJR Q2Annals of Occupational and Environmental MedicineOA

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by persistent airflow limitation. Therefore, both work ability and workday length may be affected in individuals with this disease. We studied a worker with suspected COPD and assessed fitness to work using post-bronchodilator spirometry, symptom assessment scales, and the exercise stress test. CASE REPORT: The patient was a 58-year-old man due to work as a field supervisor in the ship constru

Management of an inflammatory abdominal aortic aneurysm causing ureteric obstruction: a case report
Yewon Kim, Paul Ghaly, Jim Iliopoulos, Gregory Leslie, Mehtab Ahmad
SJR Q3Journal of Surgical Case ReportsOA

Inflammatory abdominal aortic aneurysms (IAAAs) are rare large-vessel pathology, with potentially life-threatening complications including obstructive uropathy secondary to retroperitoneal fibrosis. Comprising a small proportion of all AAA, their pathogenesis remains unknown, with the hypothesis of infective and immunological aetiologies circulating in current literature. Management principles of IAAAs aim at prevention of aortic rupture and include open-surgical or endovascular therapies. Due t

Analyst Coverage and the Market Valuation of Capitalized versus Expensed R&D*
Yewon Kim, Hyungjin Cho, Seunghee Yang
SJR Q3Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies

Abstract We investigate the information benefits from R&D capitalization by focusing on the role of financial analysts in mitigating information asymmetry. Using a large sample of Korean firms, we find a positive association between analyst coverage and the market valuation of expensed R&D indicating that an analyst's activities can help investors to understand the implications of R&D investments. In contrast, analyst coverage does not significantly improve the valuation of capitaliz

How Does a Firm’s Earnings Response Coefficient Vary with Managerial Ability? Evidence from Korea
Yewon Kim, Sera Choi, Bum‐Joon Kim
SJR Q1Emerging Markets Finance and Trade

This study investigates managerial ability’s effect on firms’ earnings response coefficients (ERCs). We find that ERC increases with managerial ability, suggesting that investors more favorably perceive earnings from competent managers. Further, managerial ability influences ERC via the information environment; the influence is positive only for firms with better information environments. Meanwhile, since foreign investors have incentive to improve the information environment to overcome their i
