About the Lab

Professor Yong-gwan Jeon's research lab specializes in advanced materials characterization, with a primary focus on transition metal oxides and intermetallic compounds using x-ray spectroscopic techniques such as XAS, XPS, and LIMS. The lab investigates electronic structure, bonding, and charge transfer phenomena in complex oxides—particularly cuprates and 4d/5d transition metal compounds—linking these to macroscopic properties like high-temperature superconductivity and catalytic behavior. A key research direction involves understanding the role of oxidation states and d-orbital occupancy in determining material functionality, with applications in energy materials and functional oxides.

Nature of the pulsed laser process for the deposition of high T c superconducting thin films

The pulsed laser thin-film deposition process can enable preparation of thin films of complex composition with good control over the film stoichiometry. The film compositions are similar to that of the target pellet and as a consequence this technique appears to be an ideal method for preparing high Tc thin films on a variety of substrates. The factors which contribute to this beneficial phenomenon have been explored by a laser ionization mass spectrometry (LIMS) and a post ablation ionization (P

High-temperature superconductivity in the presence ofO 2p−Cu 3dholes: A spectroscopic study
S. Horn, Jianhua Cai, S. A. Shaheen, Y. Jeon, Mark Croft, C. L. Chang, M. L. denBoer
Physical review. B, Condensed matter

We report core-level spectroscopic measurements of several cuprate perovskites comparing those which exhibit superconductivity above 90 K to others which do not. Both x-ray photoemission and x-ray absorption results show that in the former Cu is more oxidized, as in CuO (nominally ${\mathrm{Cu}}^{2+}$), than in the latter. Trivalent Cu is clearly excluded. The O $1s$ core level is at higher binding energy in the superconductors, implying the presence of O $2p$ holes. The rare-earth valence in Ce

X-ray-absorption studies of thed-orbital occupancies of selected 4d/5dtransition metals compounded with group-III/IV ligands
Y. Jeon, J. Chen, Mark Croft
Physical review. B, Condensed matter

X-ray-absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is used to explore the systematic variations in the 4d/5d transition-metal {T=Au, Pt, Ir, Re, Pd, Ag} d-orbital occupancy in binary T-X compounds {X=Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn}. Specifically, the strength of the white line (WL) feature at the T-${\mathit{L}}_{2,3}$ edges is used to quantify the changes in the d-orbital occupancy induced by T-X bond formation. Systematic chemical trends in bonding-induced d-orbital-occupancy changes, evidenced by the data, are disc

Transition-metal (Au, Pt, Ir, Re) bonding to Al,Si,Ge: X-ray-absorption studies
Y. Jeon, Boyun Qi, Fang Lu, Mark Croft
Physical review. B, Condensed matter

We report transition-metal (T) ${L}_{2}$ and ${L}_{3}$ near-edge x-ray-absorption spectroscopy measurements on more than a score of T-X compounds with T=Au, Pt, Ir, and Re and X=Al, Si, and Ge. We correlate the strength of the (2p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5d)-related ``white line'' feature at these edges to the degree of chemical-bonding-induced 5d-orbital charge transfer in these materials. Similar bonding trends are shown to be present in 1:2:2 compounds involving these T and X elements. Finally
