Professor Yong Hoon Jang's research lab specializes in the mechanics and physics of materials at micro- and nanoscale interfaces, with a focus on electrical and thermal contact behaviors in dissimilar materials. The lab investigates fundamental phenomena in welding processes—particularly tandem GMAW and ultrasonic welding—emphasizing droplet dynamics, arc interactions, and mechanical mixing at metallic interfaces. Advanced numerical simulations, including molecular dynamics and finite element methods, are employed to model complex contact and deformation behaviors under thermal and mechanical loading. The lab also develops intelligent control and observer design techniques for nonlinear systems, particularly in sampled-data and fuzzy control frameworks.

Tandem welding increases productivity in gas metal arc welding (GMAW). We investigate asynchronous DC–AC pulse tandem GMAW. We analyse welding arc and droplet behaviour for two tandem welding processes, DC standard-AC pulse and DC pulse-AC pulse. Spatters were generated by attractive and repulsive arc interferences.
