About the Lab

Professor Yong-Je Lee's research lab focuses on metabolic and cardiovascular health, particularly in the context of aging, obesity, and chronic disease prevention. The lab investigates the role of nutritional supplements—such as coenzyme Q10 and Korean red ginseng—in improving metabolic parameters, reducing inflammation, and protecting against mitochondrial dysfunction. It also explores biomarkers of aging, including heart rate variability and arterial stiffness, with an emphasis on early detection and intervention in conditions like metabolic syndrome and frailty in older adults. The lab integrates clinical, molecular, and translational research to develop preventive and therapeutic strategies for age-related diseases.

Inflammation may be linked to the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer. However, two conflicting observational results were recently reported on the relationship between the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) and the risk of colorectal cancer. Few epidemiologic studies have examined the association between inflammatory markers and the risk of colorectal cancer. We prospectively examined the mortality and incidence risk for colon and rectal cancers among 424,419 Koreans (108,907 men and 31

Development of gene‐based markers for the identification of wheat‐rye translocations possessing 1RS
YJ Lee, YW Seo
SJR Q2New Zealand Journal of Crop and Horticultural ScienceOA

Wheat‐rye translocations carry valuable genes for pest resistance; this has led to their incorporation into wheat varieties. To develop gene‐based 1RS specific markers, expressed sequence tags (ESTs) mapped to the short arm of wheat homoeologous group 1 were downloaded from a public database. ESTs and mature transcript sequences of nine species from the Poaceae family were BLASTed to perform comparative analysis. ESTs selected using the BLAST tool were used for primer design. The target sequence

Korean Red Ginseng Protects Against Mitochondrial Damage and Intracellular Inflammation in an Animal Model of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
박진경, 심재용, 조아라, 조미라, 이용제

Korean red ginseng (KRG), a heat-processed Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer), has been used as a traditional medicine for its beneficial effects on hyperglycemia. This study aimed to investigate whether the antidiabetic action of KRG in an animal model of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is partly mediated by prevention of mitochondrial dysfunction and intracellular inflammation. Four-week-old C57BL/KsJ db/db mice (a genetic animal model of obese type 2 DM) and C57BL/KsJ db/+ mice were divi

Journal of Korean Medical Science

Several studies have reported that hyperuricemia is associated with the development of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Increasing evidences also suggest that hyperuricemia may have a pathogenic role in the progression of renal disease. Paradoxically, uric acid is also widely accepted to have antioxidant activity in experimental studies. We aimed to investigate the association between glomerular filtration rate (GFR)and uric acid in healthy individuals with a normal serum level of uric a

Purpose: Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a serum glycoprotein produced predominantly in hepatocytes. As such, the synthesis of SHBG could be associated with liver function and metabolic syndrome. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels could reflect hepatocellular injury and insulin resistance; however, the relationship between hepatic steatosis and ALT with SHBG has not been investigated in humans. The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between SHBG and hepatocyte

Upcoming Aging Society and Men’s Health: Focus on Clinical Implications of Exercise and Lifestyle Modification
박병진, 이용제

Recent epidemiological research has indicated that men have increased health risks due to biological and social factors. Research in the area of men’s health has been focused on disease events and subsequent disabilities. In future aging societies, more attention should be paid to the importance of men’s health because a decreased quality of life and increased social burden are impending unless proper maneuvers are taken to slow the development and progression of morbidity through the use of pre

Successful or health aging may not be enough of explaining all perspectives of aging-related consequences in the upcoming super-aged society. Korea has experienced a rapid decline in the traditional family structure and a soar in nuclear families or solitude. Korea sustains paradoxically dissociated delivery of health care and welfare despite a decade of policy implementation of long-term care insurance. On November 20th, 2018, to resolve these challenges, the Ministry of Health and Welfare proc
