Professor Yongho Kim's research lab specializes in the design and engineering of advanced functional materials with applications in environmental health, nanomedicine, and energy technology. The lab focuses on understanding the toxicological impacts of airborne particulate matter from biomass combustion, developing protein-inspired peptides for precise nanostructure assembly, and creating shape- and phase-controlled semiconductor nanocrystals for optoelectronic applications. Additionally, the lab investigates molecular mechanisms of nanoparticle-induced lung injury and designs superhydrophobic materials for chemical threat detection and sensing.

We demonstrate a novel synthetic scheme that can be used to control the crystalline phase and shape of GaP semiconductor nanocrystals. Our study shows that steric effects of surfactant ligands can modulate the crystalline phases and control the shapes of nanocrystals.
