About the Lab

Professor Yongil Jeon's research lab specializes in financial economics and regulatory economics, with a focus on banking industry dynamics, financial sector performance, and the impact of regulatory reforms. The lab investigates the effects of financial crises—particularly the Asian financial crisis—on domestic and foreign banks, as well as the long-term consequences of deregulation on bank consolidation, performance, and systemic stability. Additional research extends to environmental economics, particularly the integration of ecological externalities into productivity analysis in natural resource industries such as tuna fishing. The lab employs econometric and productivity modeling techniques to assess institutional and policy impacts across financial and environmental sectors.

Performance of Domestic and Foreign Banks: The Case of Korea and the Asian Financial Crisis
Yongil Jeon, Stephen M. Miller
SJR Q2Global Economic Review

Abstract This paper examines the performance of banks, domestic and foreign, in Korea before and after the Asian financial crisis, examining how the profitability of those banks differed and identifying factors that explain why those differences existed. The performance of Korean banks deteriorated dramatically in 1998 with most banks recovering somewhat in 1999. Foreign banks did not experience the same negative effect on their performance as a rule. Overall, the domestic Korean banks suffered

Is There a Global Market for Tuna? Policy Implications for Tropical Tuna Fisheries
Yongil Jeon, Christopher Reid, Dale Squires
SJR Q2Ocean Development & International Law

Abstract Regional ex-vessel markets for cannery-grade skipjack tuna throughout the globe are spatially integrated by price, but such markets for yellowfin tuna are spatially independent. The Americas exert primary price leadership in ex-vessel skipjack markets, but Bangkok and American Samoa also exert price leadership, and Ivory Coast, Japan, and Spain are largely price followers. Regional ex-vessel markets for skipjack and yellowfin are not integrated by prices. While price effects of this nat

Deregulation and Structural Change in the U.S. Commercial Banking Industry
Yongil Jeon, Stephen M. Miller
OpenCommons - UConn (University of Connecticut)OA

Regulatory change not seen since the Great Depression swept the U.S. banking industry beginning in the early 1980s and culminated with the Interstate Banking and Branching Efficiency Act of 1994. Banking analysts anticipated dramatic consolidation with large numbers of mergers and acquisitions. Some expressed concern about the long-term health of the smaller community banks. This paper describes and discusses the actual evolution of the U.S. banking industry over the past two decades, using the

The effect of the Asian financial crisis on the performance of Korean nationwide banks
Yongil Jeon, Stephen M. Miller
Applied Financial Economics

The Asian financial crisis spread its effect quickly across a number of countries. Korea faced serious problems in her financial and corporate sectors. This study considers the performance of Korean nationwide banks before and immediately after the Asian financial crisis. The performance of Korean nationwide banks took a big hit in 1998. Most banks recovered somewhat in 1999 with the notable exception of the further deterioration of Seoul. Several factors possess strong correlations with bank pe

Productivity growth in natural resource industries and the environment: an application to the Korean tuna purse-seine fleet in the Pacific Ocean
Dale Squires, Christopher Reid, Yongil Jeon
SJR Q2International Economic Journal

Measures of multifactor productivity growth in natural resource industries are misleading without accounting for the effects on the environment. This paper introduces environmental effects into an output-oriented Malmquist index of multifactor productivity growth in order to evaluate growth in productivity and technical efficiency for Korean purse seine vessels fishing for tuna in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean.

BIRTHS, DEATHS, AND MARRIAGES IN THE U.S. COMMERCIAL BANKING INDUSTRY
Yongil Jeon, Stephen M. Miller
SJR Q1Economic Inquiry

Regulatory change not seen since the Great Depression swept the U.S. banking industry beginning in the early 1980s and culminated with the Interstate Banking and Branching Efficiency Act of 1994. This article examines whether deregulation affected new charter (birth), failure (death), and merger (marriage) rates of U.S. commercial banks from 1978 to 2004 after controlling for bank performance and state economic activity. We find strong evidence that intrastate and interstate deregulation stimula

Bank Concentration and Performance
Yongil Jeon, Stephen M. Miller
OpenCommons - UConn (University of Connecticut)OA

Regulatory change not seen since the Great Depression swept the U.S. banking industry beginning in the early 1980s, culminating with the Interstate Banking and Branching Efficiency Act of 1994. Significant consolidations have occurred in the banking industry. This paper considers the correlation, if any, between banking concentration on a state-by-state basis and average bank profitability within a state, finding strong support for a positive correlation. Moreover, temporal causality tests imply

Fertility in Sub‐Saharan African Countries with Consideration to Health and Poverty*
Yongil Jeon, Sang‐young Rhyu, Michael P. Shields
SJR Q1African Development Review

Abstract : Fertility has begun to fall in sub‐Saharan Africa but it remains high on average and particularly for a few countries. This paper examines African fertility using a panel data set of 47 sub‐Saharan countries between 1962 and 2003. Fixed and random country effect estimates are made in models where the explanatory variables are suggested by the theory of the demographic transition as modified by Caldwell (1982) . Special attention is paid to the economic status of women, urbanization, t

Developing country fisheries and technical efficiency: the Java Sea purse seine fishery
Yongil Jeon, Ishak Haji Omar, K. Kuperan, Dale Squires, Indah Susilowati
SJR Q2Applied Economics

The analysis of technical efficiency in developing country agriculture is well established but has been overlooked for developing country commercial marine fisheries. Policies raising technical efficiency in agriculture are viewed as uniformly positive but are a mixed blessing in fisheries due to the open-access property right and common-pool resource. This study explores this contradiction and policies aimed to promote sustainable development and management of renewable common pool resources th
