About the Lab

Professor Yoo Jin Jang's research lab focuses on regenerative medicine and stem cell biology, with a strong emphasis on understanding and harnessing the potential of pluripotent and mesenchymal stem cells for tissue repair and disease modeling. The lab develops advanced in vitro differentiation protocols to generate highly functional, homogeneous hepatocyte-like cells and trophoblast stem-like cells, aiming to improve disease modeling and drug toxicity screening. Additionally, the lab investigates the paracrine mechanisms of mesenchymal stem cells, particularly their secretome, in treating fibrotic diseases such as liver fibrosis. The lab also explores psychosocial factors in adolescent mental health, examining the interplay between grit, attention problems, aggression, and smartphone dependency through large-scale survey data analysis.

Induction of human trophoblast stem-like cells from primed pluripotent stem cells
Yu Jin Jang, Mijeong Kim, Bum‐Kyu Lee, Jonghwan Kim
SJR Q1Proceedings of the National Academy of SciencesOA

The placenta is a transient but important multifunctional organ crucial for healthy pregnancy for both mother and fetus. Nevertheless, limited access to human placenta samples and the paucity of a proper in vitro model system have hampered our understanding of the mechanisms underlying early human placental development and placenta-associated pregnancy complications. To overcome these constraints, we established a simple procedure with a short-term treatment of bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4

Highly homogeneous and functional stem cell-derived hepatocyte-like cells (HLCs) are considered a promising option in the cell-based therapy of liver disease and the development of effective in vitro toxicity screening tools. However, the purity of cells and expression and/or activity of drug metabolizing enzymes in stem cell-derived HLCs are usually too low to be useful for clinical or in vitro applications. Here, we describe a highly optimized hepatic differentiation protocol, which produces >

Identification of MFGE8 in mesenchymal stem cell secretome as an anti-fibrotic factor in liver fibrosis
Yu Jin Jang, Su Yeon An, Jong‐Hoon Kim
SJR Q1BMB ReportsOA

The beneficial paracrine roles of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in tissue repair have potential in therapeutic strategies against various diseases. However, the key therapeutic factors secreted from MSCs and their exact molecular mechanisms of action remain unclear. In this study, the cell-free secretome of umbilical cord-derived MSCs showed significant anti-fibrotic activity in the mouse models of liver fibrosis. The involved action mechanism was the regulation of hepatic stellate cell activati

SJR Q2Archives of Plastic SurgeryOA

BACKGROUND: Poststernotomy mediastinitis is a rare, but life-threatening complication, thus early diagnosis and proper management is essential for poststernotomy mediastinitis. The main treatment for mediastinitis is aggressive debridement. Several options exist for reconstruction of defects after debridement. The efficacy of immediate debridement and reconstruction with a pectoralis major muscle flap designed for the defect immediately after the diagnosis of poststernotomy mediastinitis is demo
