About the Lab
Professor Young-eun Yoon's research lab focuses on urological oncology and renal protection, with a strong emphasis on improving outcomes in kidney cancer and kidney transplantation. The lab investigates novel therapeutic strategies such as remote ischemic preconditioning for renal ischemia-reperfusion injury, targeted therapies like sunitinib combined with natural compounds (e.g., ginsenoside) in clear cell renal cell carcinoma, and the identification of epigenetic targets such as EZH2 across renal cell carcinoma subtypes. Additionally, the lab explores minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robot-assisted partial nephrectomy and focal therapy, for small renal masses, and evaluates male fertility using innovative home-based monitoring tools.

15Remote ischemic preconditioning (IP) is a potential renoprotective strategy. However, there has been no demonstrated result in large animals and the role of time window in remote IP remains to be defined. Using a single-kidney porcine model, we evaluated organ protective function of remote IP in renal ischemia reperfusion injury. Fifteen Yorkshire pigs, 20 weeks old and weighing 35-38 kg were used. One week after left nephrectomy, we performed remote IP (clamping right external iliac artery, 2 c
BACKGROUND: Robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RPN) and focal therapy (FT) have both been successfully employed in the management of small renal masses. However, despite this being the era of minimally invasive surgery, few comparative studies exist on RPN and FT. The aim of our study is to review perioperative, renal functional and oncologic outcomes of FT and RPN in cT1 renal masses. METHODS: Literature published in Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases up to April 22, 2018, was sys
Sunitinib, a VEGF blockade, is used to treat clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). However, the anti-cancer treatment effects of sunitinib do not last long in ccRCC patients. Ginsenoside, a natural medicine extracted from ginseng, has been studied in cancer treatment and shown to have anti-tumor effects and low toxicity. We assessed cell viability and cell cycle analysis in ccRCC cell lines after treatment with ginsenoside and sunitinib. DNA damage was evaluated by measuring 8-OHdG levels and
We confirmed the reliability of the SwimCount™ as a home-based device for male fertility by evaluating the total progressively motile sperm concentration.
The most common type of kidney cancer in adults is renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which accounts for approximately 90% of cases. RCC is a variant disease with numerous subtypes; the most common subtype is clear cell RCC (ccRCC, 75%), followed by papillary RCC (pRCC, 10%) and chromophobe RCC (chRCC, 5%). To identify a genetic target for all subtypes, we analyzed The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) databases of ccRCC, pRCC, and chromophobe RCC. Enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2), which encodes a methyltra
Donors with higher preoperative urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio levels require close observation because there is a greater possibility of microalbuminuria developing after donation even if the ratio is within the normal range. A higher urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio was also associated with delayed recovery of renal function and histological abnormalities.
PURPOSE: Although cure rate and efficacy of treatment for urinary stone disease have been improved, clinicians have been indifferent to the quality of life (QoL) of stone patients in Korea. The objective of this study was to develop a Korean version of Wisconsin questionnaire about quality of life questionnaire (K-WISQOL) of stone patients for use in Korea. METHODS: Linguistic validation was permitted for translation by its developers. Three bilingual nonspecialists and 11 panels who were active
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) frequently recurs or metastasizes after surgical resection. Everolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, is used as a second-line treatment, but the response of RCC to everolimus is insufficient. Metformin is an antidiabetic drug; recent reports have indicated its anti-cancer effects in various cancers, and it is known to have synergistic effects with other drugs. We investigated the possibility of coadministering everolimus and metformin as an effective treatment for RCC. RCC cells
Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) is a well-known phenomenon in which tissues are exposed to a brief period of ischemia prior to a longer ischemic event. This technique produces tissue tolerance to ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI). Currently, IPC's mechanism of action is poorly understood. Using a porcine single kidney model, we performed remote IPC with renal IRI and evaluated the IPC mechanism of action. Following left nephrectomy, 15 female Yorkshire pigs were divided into three groups: no IPC
