About the Lab
Professor Young-hoon Yoon's research lab focuses on emergency medicine and critical care, with a strong emphasis on diagnostic accuracy, infection management, and toxicological emergencies in the emergency department. The lab investigates point-of-care testing biomarkers such as procalcitonin and D-dimer for early diagnosis of sepsis and pulmonary embolism, while also exploring adverse effects of herbal medicines like Ganoderma species. 15We investigated the clinical value of whole blood procalcitonin using point of care testing, quick sequential organ failure assessment score, C-reactive protein and lactate in emergency department patients with suspected infection and assessed the accuracy of the whole blood procalcitonin test by point-of-care testing. By itself ADSF assessment performed well in diagnosis of PE. The combined result of a positive D-dimer and abnormal ADSF increased the specificity for diagnosing PE compared with the D-dimer test alone. The use of additional bedside ADSF assessment following a positive D-dimer test may reduce the need for further imaging studies to detect PE in patients with a low or intermediate clinical probability.
The Ganoderma species are mushrooms used for herbal medicinal purposes in northeast Asia. Two cases of simultaneous reversible pancytopenia following the consumption of decoction of Ganoderma neojaponicum Imazeki are presented.
