About the Lab
Professor Young-Joon Jeon's research lab focuses on molecular and computational oncology, with a central emphasis on the regulatory roles of non-coding RNAs—particularly microRNAs and long non-coding RNAs—in cancer progression, metastasis, and therapy resistance. The lab investigates tumor suppressor networks involving p53, MYC, and TUSC3, exploring their interactions with non-coding RNAs and downstream signaling pathways such as the unfolded protein response and NF-κB. Using integrative approaches combining genomics, functional assays, and machine learning, the lab aims to decode regulatory mechanisms in hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal cancer, and non-small cell lung cancer, with translational applications in anticancer peptide discovery and therapeutic target identification.

15p53 suppresses tumor progression and metastasis. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a key process in tumor progression and metastasis. The transcription factors ZEB1 and ZEB2 promote EMT. Here, we show that p53 suppresses EMT by repressing expression of ZEB1 and ZEB2. By profiling 92 primary hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) and 9 HCC cell lines, we found that p53 up-regulates microRNAs (miRNAs), including miR-200 and miR-192 family members. The miR-200 family members transactivated by p5
BACKGROUND: The functions of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been identified in several cancers, but the roles of lncRNAs in colorectal cancer (CRC) are less well understood. The transcription factor MYC is known to regulate lncRNAs and has been implicated in cancer cell proliferation and tumorigenesis. METHODS: CRC cells and tissues were profiled to identify lncRNAs differentially expressed in CRC, from which we further selected MYC-regulated lncRNAs. We used luciferase promoter assay, ChIP,
Anticancer peptides are emerging anticancer drug that offers fewer side effects and is more effective than chemotherapy and targeted therapy. Predicting anticancer peptides from sequence information is one of the most challenging tasks in immunoinformatics. In the past ten years, machine learning-based approaches have been proposed for identifying ACP activity from peptide sequences. These methods include our previous method MLACP (developed in 2017) which made a significant impact on anticancer
TRAIL (TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand) is a promising anticancer agent that can be potentially used as an alternative or complementary therapy because of its specific antitumor activity. However, TRAIL can also stimulate the proliferation of cancer cells through the activation of NF-κB, but the exact mechanism is still poorly understood. In this study, we show that chronic exposure to subtoxic concentrations of TRAIL results in acquired resistance. This resistance is associated with the i
Non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) is leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the world. The Tumor Suppressor Candidate 3 (TUSC3) at chromosome 8p22 known to be frequently deleted in cancer is often found to be deleted in advanced stage of solid tumors. However, the role of TUSC3 still remains controversial in lung cancer and context-dependent in several cancers. Here we propose that miR-224/-520c-dependent TUSC3 deficiency enhances the metastatic potential of NSCLC through the alteration o
Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are primarily regulated by their cellular localization, which is responsible for their molecular functions, including cell cycle regulation and genome rearrangements. Accurately identifying the subcellular location of lncRNAs from sequence information is crucial for a better understanding of their biological functions and mechanisms. In contrast to traditional experimental methods, bioinformatics or computational methods can be applied for the annotation of lncRNA s
The worldwide appearance of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has generated significant concern and posed a considerable challenge to global health. Phosphorylation is a common post-translational modification that affects many vital cellular functions and is closely associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Precise identification of phosphorylation sites could provide more in-depth insight into the processes underlying SARS-CoV-2 infection and help alleviate the continuing
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most deadly genetic diseases, but surprisingly chemotherapeutic approaches against HCC are only limited to a few targets. In particular, considering the difficulty of a chemotherapeutic drug development in terms of cost and time enforces searching for surrogates to minimize effort and maximize efficiency in anti-cancer therapy. In spite of the report that approximately one thousand lichen-derived metabolites have been isolated, the knowledge about the
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a deadly disease regardless of sex, and a few therapeutic approaches have been fully developed at advanced stages, even if some strategies have durable clinical benefits, such as immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Ganoderma lucidum has been recognized as an organism that suppresses tumors and inflammation; however, the molecular mechanisms induced by a triterpenoid in Ganoderma lucidum, Lucidumol A, have not yet been fully explored in CRC and inflammatory responses.
