About the Lab
Professor Youngki Lee's research lab specializes in advanced electric machine drives and power electronics, with a strong focus on sensorless control techniques for permanent magnet synchronous machines, particularly interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs). The lab investigates model-based estimation methods, fault ride-through strategies for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems, and optimization of torque and efficiency in motor drives under real-world constraints such as magnetic saturation and parameter variations. Key research directions include high-performance sensorless control, fault detection and ride-through in modular multilevel converters (MMCs), and online optimization for maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) operation.

15This paper presents the developments of sensorless control of interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) for last 10 years, which could be divided into the past and the present for each 5 years. Several popular methods developed for last 10 years would be described and evaluated, and the limitations with the methods are discussed. In the past a concept extended EMF (EEMF) was introduced and it can model IPMSM as a non-salient motor, meaning that the representation of IPMSM in the esti
In this paper, the theoretical analysis of the position estimation error in position-sensorless operation using pulsating square wave signal injection is presented. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon that the position estimation performance varies depending on the injection frequency. Mathematical derivation supported by simulation and experimental results shows that, in no-load condition, the voltage distortion induces position estimation error with 3rd-order harmonics if th
In this paper, new model-based sensorless control methods are proposed that include independent estimations of position and speed errors, and compatible position and speed estimators. Using the proposed position estimator, a unity transfer function can be achieved from the actual position to the estimated position, eliminating the effects of load disturbances. This implies that the position error would ideally be zero, even in a transient state. In addition, the effects of parameter and voltage
This paper presents an online maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control that considers both magnetic saturation and cross-magnetization effects of interior permanent-magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs). For IPMSM drives, especially in torque-controlled applications, torque accuracy and high-efficiency operations are important issues. They can be dealt as a constrained optimization problem to satisfy both torque reference tracking and loss-minimizing operation. In this paper, nonlinear simultaneo
When a single-line-to-ground (SLG) fault occurs on the ac side of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) in an high-voltage direct-current transmission (HVDC) system, it results in the ac-side voltage sag and leads to an instantaneous reduction of the MMC power capacity. Thus, it calls for the fault ride through (FRT) strategy to coordinate two MMC stations in the HVDC system to protect the MMCs against the submodule (SM) capacitor overvoltage in case of the SLG fault. In the meantime, the HVDC
This paper analyzes and compares position estimation performances of fundamental-model-based sensorless control methods considering the effects of inverter nonlinearities and parameter estimation errors. Based on the investigation of four conventional sensorless control algorithms, estimated position error from each algorithm is represented in a quantitative manner. This representation is helpful in understanding how the error influences the position estimation performance. And, it is revealed t
Nowadays, a Line Commutated Converter (LCC)-HVDC is a mature technology with decades industry experience. Even though it's with several advantages such as higher reliability, lower cost, and higher efficiency, it presents some drawbacks such as large converter station size and lack of black starting capability. So the LCC-HVDC is not suitable for some applications in which black starting capability is necessary or high power density is highly emphasized. A LCC-Voltage Source Converter(VSC) hybri
The Zero Sequence Circulating Current (ZSCC) flows inevitably in parallel converters sharing common DC and AC sources. The currents flowing commonly in all converters increase losses and decrease the overall capacity of parallel converters. This paper proposes a simple and effective ZSCC suppression method based on the Space Vector PWM (SVPWM) method with the ZSCC controller. The zero sequence voltage for the proposed SVPWM is calculated based not on the phase voltage references, but on the grid
This paper proposes a compensation method for precise position-sensorless control using high-frequency pulsating voltage injection and the criterion for applicability of the proposed compensation method is discussed. Theoretical background of the proposed 3-dimensional compensation table as well as the implementation method is described and it is disclosed that the real rotor position and the convergent position should have one-to-one relationship for precise estimation of the rotor position. Al
In this paper, we present the results of a preliminary study on the piezoelectric energy harvesting performance of a Zr-doped PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PZT) single crystal beam. A novel piezoelectric beam cantilever structure is used to demonstrate the feasibility of generating AC voltage during a state of vibration. The energy-harvesting capability of a PMN-PZT beam is calculated and tested. The frequency response of the cantilever device shows that the first mode resonance frequency of the ex
The AC side Single Line to Ground (SLG) fault is one of the most frequent faults in power systems. And, in an HVDC system based on modular multilevel converter it calls for the fault ride through strategy to transmit maximum possible electricity during the fault to secure power system stability. It presents different characteristics of SLG faults at the voltage regulator side and the power dispatcher side. In this paper a comprehensive fault ride through strategy for AC side SLG fault occurred a
In the conventional control strategy of the VSC-HVDC system based on the MMC, direct modulation was employed and the terminal behavior of the MMC was similar to that of the two-level converter. The DC bus voltage of the power dispatcher side was regulated indirectly by controlling voltage regulator side DC bus voltage, and the transmission line current was determined passively by the power flow. Fluctuation of the transmission line voltage would occur during rapid power flow variation due to the
This paper presents the techniques for regulation of system balancing in modular multilevel converter (MMC) based HVDC system under the AC grid double line fault condition. Due to the special structure of MMC, the balancing of the cell capacitor voltage is crucial for any operating circumstance of the system. Also, the responses against the grid faults of HVDC system based on MMC are different to those based on the conventional voltage sourced converters. Therefore, even under the nonpermanent f
In this paper, a method to compensate parameter variation of IPMSM for accurate torque control in sensorless control mode is proposed. First, a full-order observer for flux estimation of IPMSM is described, and how the inductance error affects the error of back-EMF estimation is analyzed. Next, the condition in which the real torque and the calculated torque based on current-model are the same is derived. And, an inductance compensator for achieving the condition is designed. The compensator can
Natural capacitor voltage balancing of six arms of a direct modulated Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) has been observed by several articles both by experiments and simulations. However, its principles have not been revealed clearly and its dynamics have not been analyzed analytically. In this paper it's shown that a DC component and a line frequency circulating current would be induced inside the converter inherently in case of arm capacitor voltage unbalance and the induced circulating curre
