Professor Younkyoo Kim's research spans interdisciplinary areas at the intersection of bioinorganic chemistry and biophysics, with a primary focus on the electronic and structural properties of heme-copper oxidases—key enzymes in biological electron transfer and oxygen reduction. His work employs advanced vibrational spectroscopy techniques, such as resonance Raman spectroscopy, to investigate the reaction intermediates and metal-ligand interactions in cytochrome c oxidase and related ferrous cyano complexes. The lab’s research provides critical insights into the mechanisms of oxygen activation and electron transfer in respiratory enzymes, with implications for understanding cellular energy production and oxidative stress.

The cyanide isotope-sensitive low-frequency vibrations of ferrous cyano complexes of cytochrome a3 are studied for cytochrome ba3 from Thermus thermophilus and cytochrome aa3 from bovine heart.
