About the Lab
Professor Yujin Park's research lab focuses on applied linguistics and biomedical sciences, with two primary research directions: (1) the development and implementation of critical literacy and video-based pedagogies in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) contexts, emphasizing student motivation and multimodal language engagement; and (2) the investigation of antimicrobial peptides from Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans, particularly their immunomodulatory effects on immune cells such as macrophages and neutrophils via FPR1 receptor activation. The lab integrates sociolinguistic analysis with molecular biology to explore both human communication and host defense mechanisms.

15This article examines an effort to support critical literacy in an English as a foreign language (EFL) setting by analyzing one college EFL reading classroom in which students read and responded to articles from The New Yorker. Data include transcribed audiotapes of classroom interaction and interviews with students, classroom materials, and response papers to the focal news article. Using these data, the research identifies (a) how critical literacy was employed in the EFL classroom, (b) studen
This article examines the interaction between grammar and multimodal resources by analyzing reported speech in Korean multiparty face-to-face interaction. The operation of two relevancy rules — minimization and recognition in interaction — is examined together with how the absence or presence of grammar is complemented by multimodal resources of various sorts. For the analysis, three categories (self-quotation, co-party quotation and third-party quotation) are posited depending on who the quoted
<p>By employing an action research framework, this study evaluated the effectiveness of a video-based curriculum in motivating EFL learners to learn English. Fifteen Korean EFL students at the secondary school context participated in an 8-week English program, which employed video clips including TED talk replays, sitcoms, TV news reports and movies as its main study material. Results from the motivation surveys (adapted from Gardner, 1985) and interviews with students showed that 1) after
Studies on the linguistic identity of multilingual speakers engaged in English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) interactions have continued to grow in the past 20 years. This paper was aimed at contributing to this line of research by studying interactional data to investigate the construction and negotiation of linguistic identities among multilingual speakers of English. Data was collected from 38 ELF interactions in a university classroom located in South Korea. The analysis shows that the students’
In this study, we report that one of the antimicrobial peptides scolopendrasin VII, derived from Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans, stimulates actin polymerization and the subsequent chemotactic migration of macrophages through the activation of ERK and protein kinase B (Akt) activity. The scolopendrasin VII-induced chemotactic migration of macrophages is inhibited by the formyl peptide receptor 1 (FPR1) antagonist cyclosporine H. We also found that scolopendrasin VII stimulate the chemotactic mi
We investigated the effects of two antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) isolated from Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans on neutrophil activity. Stimulation of mouse neutrophils with the two AMPs elicited chemotactic migration of the cells in a pertussis toxin-sensitive manner. The two AMPs also stimulated activation of ERK and Akt, which contribute to chemotactic migration of neutrophils. We found that AMP-stimulated neutrophil chemotaxis was blocked by a formyl peptide receptor (FPR) 1 antagonist (cycl
Using conversation analysis, the current article analyzes three Korean negative question forms (an-/ci anh-/ken eps-) in relation to two sentence final particles (i.e., the committal -ci/cwo, and the connective -ko/kwu) using data collected from the history taking phase of in Korean primary care consultations where an overwhelming number questions are employed by physicians. First, this paper shows through sequential analysis that a gradual order of epistemic strength is encoded in these three n
In conversational discourse, topic management plays a vital role in enabling interactants to participate in and continue the conversation. Using conversation analysis, this study revisited the actions performed by ‘unfinished turns’ through sequential analysis of a collection of conversations. The data set included a corpus of 27 naturally occurring, videotaped, face-to-face conversations (with a combined duration of approximately 300 minutes) between native English speakers and nonnative Englis
Conventional expressions are considered an important area of study informing L2 pragmatics and inter-language pragmatics. This study investigates the differences between native English speakers’ and Korean EFL speakers’ productions of conventional expressions by employing an audio-visual production task (adapted from Bardovi-Harlig, 2009). Results show that EFL students statistically differ from their native speaker counterparts in about half of the scenarios involving the production of conventi
Although repetition of prosody plays a significant role in children’s language development, few studies have investigated the interactional role of children’s use of boundary tones in talk-in-interaction. This study investigates the interaction between a two year old Korean child and her caretakers to describe the child’s ability to participate in building adjacency pair sequences using boundary tone repetition. Analysis shows that the child acts as a competent interactant by building sequences,
