About the Lab
Professor Yu-Mi Kim's research lab focuses on environmental and occupational health, particularly the impact of heavy metal exposure on maternal and child health, with an emphasis on lead, cadmium, and mercury levels during pregnancy and early life. The lab also investigates socioeconomic inequalities in health risk factors and their influence on chronic disease development, integrating epidemiological data from national surveys. Additionally, the lab explores molecular mechanisms underlying renal function regulation, such as autophagy in aquaporin 2 degradation, and contributes to materials science through studies on thin-film transistors and defect engineering in semiconductor devices. Socioeconomic inequalities are pervasive across various health indicators, and some of them are increasing. The trends in socioeconomic inequalities in health should be carefully monitored, and comprehensive measures to alleviate health inequalities are needed, especially for young populations.

Our study aimed to conduct a comparative evaluation of various noninvasive tests (NITs) for risk stratification in at-risk population for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), focusing on cardiovascular and liver-related mortality. A total of 21,715 adults aged 40 years and older were enrolled at baseline. The mean follow-up period was 12.39 years. Three types of NITs (fibrosis-4 index [FIB-4], NAFLD fibrosis score [NFS], and steatosis-associated fibrosis estimator [SAFE] score) were used.
