About the Lab
Professor Yun-ki Hong's research lab specializes in the interdisciplinary study of historical military technology and cultural symbolism in East Asian literary and religious traditions, particularly focusing on the Three Kingdoms period as portrayed in *The Romance of the Three Kingdoms*. The lab investigates ancient weapons such as crossbows, bows, and maces from literary, historical, scientific, and archaeological perspectives, emphasizing their representation, functionality, and symbolic significance in classical texts and temple inscriptions. A key research direction involves the material culture of Confucian and folk religious practices in Korea, especially the veneration of Guan Yu and the historical inscriptions associated with his shrines in Seoul.
