About the Lab
Professor Yunha Jung's research lab focuses on the long-term socio-economic impacts of historical institutions, agricultural systems, and environmental shocks. Her work explores how enduring factors such as slavery, cotton cultivation, and natural disasters shape contemporary outcomes in human capital, cultural values, and economic development. Using innovative empirical strategies and historical data, the lab investigates structural change, intergenerational persistence, and the role of exogenous shocks in shaping regional and individual-level trajectories.

15This study examines the influence of agricultural labor intensity on individualism across U.S. counties. To measure historical labor intensity in agriculture, we combine data on crop-specific labor requirements and county-specific crop mix around 1900. Potential endogeneity of agricultural labor intensity is addressed using climate-induced variation in crop mix. Our estimates indicate that a one standard deviation increase in labor intensity is associated with a reduction of 0.2-0.3 standard dev
Despite many discussions on the impacts of natural disasters on fertility outcomes, their implications for fertility preferences as a mechanism remain unexplored. This study proposes that natural disasters could promote fertility preferences by reinforcing traditional values. The empirical analysis relies on a post-tsunami longitudinal survey of individuals in the provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra in Indonesia frankenberg2020study. Out of the 28,376 survey respondents, our sample considers aro
In spite of sizable qualitative literature on the long-run legacy of slavery, its robust evidence and convincing mechanism have not been established. This research evaluates the legacy of slavery on long-run development and its detailed mechanism which consists of two key factors, labor market institutions and human capital structure. Using county-level data of the U.S. South and exploiting exogenous variation in ecological conditions, I show that slavery has had persistent negative impact on ec
This contains the codes and data needed to replicate the tables in the paper. There are three different sets of data for the county-level cross-sectional, the metro-level cross-sectional, and the county-level panel estimations.
