In a very recent accomplishment, the two-dimensional form of biphenylene network (BPN) has been fabricated. Motivated by this exciting experimental result on 2D layered BPN structure, herein we perform detailed density-functional theory-based first-principles calculations, in order to gain insight into the structural, mechanical, electronic and optical properties of this promising nanomaterial. Our theoretical results reveal the BPN structure is constructed from three rings of tetragon, hexagon
Inspired by the recent successful growth of Ti2C and Ti3C2 monolayers, here, we investigate the structural, electronic, and mechanical properties of functionalized Ti2C and Ti3C2 monolayers by means of density functional theory calculations. The results reveal that monolayers of Ti2C and Ti3C2 are dynamically stable metals. Phonon band dispersion calculations demonstrate that two-surface functionalization of Ti2C and Ti3C2via chalcogenides (S, Se, and Te), halides (F, Cl, Br, and I), and oxygen
By employing first-principles calculations within the framework of density functional theory, we investigated the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of graphene and various two-dimensional carbon-nitride (2DNC) nanosheets. The different 2DCN gives rise to diverse electronic properties such as metals (C3N2), semimetals (C4N and C9N4), half-metals (C4N3), ferromagnetic-metals (C9N7), semiconductors (C2N, C3N, C3N4, C6N6, and C6N8), spin-glass semiconductors (C10N9 and C14N12), and ins
In this work, novel two-dimensional BC[Formula: see text]X (X = N, P, As) monolayers with X atoms out of the B-C plane, are predicted by means of the density functional theory. The structural, electronic, optical, photocatalytic and thermoelectric properties of the BC[Formula: see text]X monolayers have been investigated. Stability evaluation of the BC[Formula: see text]X single-layers is carried out by phonon dispersion, ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation, elastic stability, and coh
Motivated by the recent experimental realization of a two-dimensional (2D) BeN4 monolayer, in this study we investigate the structural, dynamical, electronic, and optical properties of a monolayer and few-layer BeN4 using first-principles calculations. The calculated phonon band dispersion reveals the dynamical stability of a free-standing BeN4 layer, while the cohesive energy indicates the energetic feasibility of the material. Electronic band dispersions show that monolayer BeN4 is a semi-meta
Two-dimensional polyaniline with structural unit C3N is an indirect semiconductor with 0.4 eV band gap, which has attracted a lot of interest because of its unusual electronic, optoelectronic, thermal, and mechanical properties useful for various applications. Adsorption of adatoms is an effective method to improve and tune the properties of C3N. Using first-principles calculations, we investigated the adsorption of adatoms, including H, O, S, F, Cl, B, C, Si, N, P, Al, Li, Na, K, Be, Mg, Ca, Sc
The fabrication of the C6N7 monolayer [Zhao et al., Sci. Bull. 66, 1764 (2021)] motivated us to discover the optical, structural, mechanical, and electronic properties of the C6N7 monolayer by employing the density functional theory (DFT) method. We find that the shear modulus and Young's modulus of the C6N7 monolayer are smaller than the relevant values of graphene. However, Poisson's ratio is more significant than that of graphene. Applying the PBE (HSE06) functional bandgap of the C6N7 monola
Low-symmetry penta-PdPSe (Pd4P4Se4) with intrinsic in-plane anisotropy was synthesized successfully [P. Li <i>et al.</i>, <i>Adv. Mater.</i>, 2021, 2102541]. Motivated by this experimental discovery, we investigate the structural, mechanical, electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties of PdPSe nanosheets <i>via</i> density functional theory calculations. The phonon dispersion, molecular dynamics simulation, and cohesive energy mechanical properties of the
The atomic, electronic, optical, and mechanical properties of penta-like two-dimensional PdPX (X = O, S, Te) nanosheets have been systematically investigated using density functional theory calculations. All three PdPX nanosheets exhibit dynamic and mechanical stability on the basis of an analysis of phonon dispersions and the Born criteria, respectively. The PdPX monolayers are found to be brittle structures. Our calculations demonstrate that the PdPX nanosheets exhibit semiconducting character
