Professor Atsuko Nakayama's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research with a strong emphasis on clinical cardiology, vascular biology, and molecular mechanisms of tissue remodeling. The lab investigates cardiovascular disease prevention and management, particularly through cardiac rehabilitation programs—both remote and outpatient—while also exploring the role of oxidative stress and natural antioxidants like luteolin in protecting against cardiac fibrosis and hypertrophy. Additionally, the lab examines structural and electronic changes in materials under extreme conditions, such as high-pressure phase transitions in bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3), linking materials science with potential applications in superconductivity. These diverse yet interconnected research directions highlight a commitment to improving patient outcomes through both clinical and basic science approaches.

We found a ∼30% reduction in any re-fractures and a ∼40% reduction in major re-fractures at the FLS hospital compared with a similar non-FLS hospital. The number of patients needed to treat to prevent one new fracture over 3 years is 20.
Structural change in Bi2Te3 under high pressure up to 16.6 GPa has been studied by powder x-ray diffraction. We observed two times of phase transitions at room temperature at the pressures of 8 and 14 GPa, respectively. According to our preliminary result on electrical resistance, it is reasonable to suppose that superconducting transition with T c =2.8 K at the pressures of 10.2 GPa is observed in phase II. Remote CR is as effective as outpatient CR for improving the short-term prognosis of patients hospitalized for heart failure post-discharge. This suggests that the remote CR program can be provided as a good alternative to the outpatient CR program.
In AAA, a lower extent of calcification correlated with accelerated expansion. The calcification index of an AAA can be a useful predictor of its expansion rate. The study findings also support the theory that the mechanisms for progression in atherosclerosis with calcification and external expansion of an aneurysm are distinct.
Oxidative stress has been implicated in cardiac remodeling (cardiac fibrosis and hypertrophy), which impairs cardiac function and metabolism; therefore, it is anticipated antioxidative compounds will have protective properties against cardiac remodeling. The crystal structure of polyhedral graphite particles (“G balls”) has been investigated under pressure up to 43 GPa and at room temperature by x-ray powder diffraction measurements. The polyhedra maintain the graphite phase under pressure higher than 40 GPa. A 29% compression in volume at 43 GPa involves an unusual decrease in the interlayer distance of 25%. Incorporation of Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions into single crystals of cubic boron nitride (c-BN) has been performed by mixing these fluorides into a solvent for crystal growth of c-BN under high pressure.
