Professor Cheol Ryong Ku's research lab focuses on metabolic diseases, particularly diabetes and obesity, with an emphasis on the molecular mechanisms underlying insulin resistance and glucose homeostasis. The lab investigates the protective and therapeutic effects of natural compounds like resveratrol on pancreatic β-cells and brown adipose tissue, as well as the impact of surgical interventions—such as bariatric surgery and gastrectomy—on glucose metabolism. A key interest lies in identifying novel, targetable pathways in the intestine and endocrine system that regulate glucose disposal and energy metabolism.

Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene; RSV) is one kind of polyphenolic phytoalexin that has many effects on metabolic diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of RSV pretreatment on β-cell. Male Sprague Dawley rats weighing 200-230 g were divided into 4 groups: (1) RSV; (2) streptozotocin (STZ, 70 mg/kg, intraperitoneally); (3) STZ after 7 days pretreatment with RSV; and (4) STZ pretreated with nicotinamide. Fasting glucose concentration was measured and an intraperitoneal
Comorbidities associated with acromegaly differed by sex in Korean subjects. High malignancy and mortality risk should be considered in female patients when managing acromegaly in Korea.
Bariatric surgery or AREG administration induces apical and basolateral membrane GLUT1 expression in the small intestinal enterocytes, resulting in increased serum glucose excretion in the gut lumen. Our findings suggest a novel, potentially targetable glucose homeostatic mechanism in the small intestine.
RSV could improve insulin resistance, which might be associated with mitochondrial activity of brown adipocyte. Further studies evaluating the activity of RSV for both the differentiation and mitochondrial activity of BAT could be helpful in investigating the effects of RSV on metabolic parameters.

Gastrectomy method is known to influence glucose homeostasis. 18F-fluoro-2-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) images acquired after gastrectomy often reveals newly developed physiological small bowel uptake. We correlated newly developed small bowel FDG uptake and glucose homeostasis in postgastrectomy gastric cancer patients. We retrospectively analyzed 239 patients without diabetes who underwent staging and follow-up FDG PET/CT scann
These data suggest that bilateral involvement of a pituitary adenoma and severely decreased immediate postoperative serum GH levels at 72 h after TSA may be independent risks factor for accelerated GHD in acromegalic patients.
Since the first outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), ongoing efforts have been made to discover an efficacious vaccine against COVID-19 to combat the pandemic. In most countries, both mRNA and DNA vaccines have been administered, and their side effects have also been reported. The clinical course of COVID-19 and the effects of vaccination against COVID-19 are both influenced by patients' health status and involve a systemic physiological response. In view of the systemic function of
Metabolic impairment is the common cause for mortality in acromegalic patients. In this study, long-term improvements of metabolic parameters were evaluated according to 2 different remission criteria. This was an observational cohort study before and up to 1 year after transsphenoidal adenomectomy (TSA). Participants were 187 patients with acromegaly. At 6 months after TSA, remitted patients with age- and sex-matched normalized IGF-1 were divided into 2 groups: remission 1 (R1), nadir growth hor

Abstract Context Dopamine agonists (DAs) are the first-line therapy for prolactinomas. Although pituitary tumors often do not completely disappear, discontinuing DAs in patients with no visible tumor on magnetic resonance imaging is advised. Objective To analyze biochemical remission after cabergoline (CAB) withdrawal in patients with visible remnant pituitary tumors. Design Retrospective cohort study. Setting Severance Hospital. Subjects We identified 734 patients with prolactinomas undergoing
