Professor Dong Hun Lee's research lab focuses on biomedical and environmental microbiology, with a strong emphasis on understanding microbial community structures in natural ecosystems using molecular techniques such as SSCP analysis of 16S rRNA genes. The lab also investigates the biological mechanisms of natural compounds—particularly ginseng and its ginsenosides—on human cell functions, especially in promoting hair follicle growth and protecting dermal papilla cells. Additionally, the lab explores the role of antioxidant enzymes like Peroxiredoxin 6 in inflammatory diseases, particularly in acute kidney injury models. The integration of molecular biology, cell signaling, and translational research defines the lab’s interdisciplinary approach.

We describe a new method for studying the structure and diversity of bacterial communities in the natural ecosystem. Our approach is based on single-strand-conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis of PCR products of 16S rRNA genes from complex bacterial populations. A pair of eubacterial universal primers for amplification of the variable V3 region were designed from the 16S rRNA sequences of 1,262 bacterial strains. The PCR conditions were optimized by using genomic DNAs from five gram-positiv
Ginseng has been shown to promote hair growth in several recent studies. However, its effects on human hair follicles and its mechanisms of action have not been sufficiently elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the hair growth-promoting effects of red ginseng extract (RGE) and its ginsenosides. The proliferative activities of cultured human hair follicles treated with RGE and ginsenoside-Rb1 were assessed using Ki-67 immunostaining. Their effects on isolated human dermal papilla cells (hD
Fractional bipolar RF treatment is an effective treatment for facial photodamage in Asians, with a favorable safety profile.
Lately, collaborative consumption has emerged as an important socio-economic model because of its economic and environmental impacts. Airbnb, an online hospitality rental service provider, is a fast growing company that utilizes rich social communications. In this paper, we aim to quantitatively characterize collaborative consumption behaviors in Airbnb. We collected and analyzed a total of 4,178 room data, and investigated which features are more strongly associated with room sales. Besides the
The purpose of the study is to explore the patterns of personal and academic stressors reported by Korean college students. The survey items included types of stress factors in academic and personal stressors and demographic variables (i.e., gender and school year). The participants were asked to provide the academic and personal stressors as the first and the second stressors. The responses were qualitatively analyzed using the method provided in the previous studies exploring college students'
Peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6) is a member of the PRDX family of antioxidant enzymes and correlated with inflammatory response. Therefore, we investigated the role of PRDX6 during lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute kidney injury. Both 3 months aged PRDX6-overexpressing transgenic mice (PRDX6 mice) and wild type (WT) mice had acute renal injury induced by intraperitoneal injection of LPS (10 mg/kg)., PRDX6 mice showed decreased mortality and renal injury following LPS challenge compared to WT mice.
Self-reported height and weight were reasonably valid in this study population.
In recent prospective studies, serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) within its normal range predicts various diseases with diverse pathophysiological processes. At present, the prevailing interpretation is that serum GGT is a marker of fatty liver or oxidative stress. However, serum GGT may predict many diseases as a cumulative biomarker of various environmental chemicals; cellular GGT is prerequisite for metabolism of glutathione (GSH) conjugates and GSH is a critical biomolecule for conjugati
<b><i>Aims:</i></b> Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is accompanied by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, which has been suggested in several studies to link with mitochondrial function. However, the mechanistic role of ROS-mediated regulation of mitochondrial function in NAFLD has not been elucidated. Since peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6) is the only member of the antioxidant PRDX family that translocates to damaged mitochondria, we investigated the PRDX6-mediated antisteatotic
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) is a nuclear hormone receptor involved in the transcriptional regulation of lipid metabolism, fatty acid oxidation, and glucose homeostasis. Its activation stimulates antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, whose expression is decreased in aged human skin. Here we investigated the expression of PPARα in aged and ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated skin, and whether PPARα activation can modulate expressions of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and pro
Both BTX-A and BTX-B are effective in the treatment of masseter hypertrophy. BTX-B, at a dose ratio of 1:70, has a comparable efficacy but a shorter duration of action than BTX-A.
