Professor Eui-Joon Kil's research lab specializes in plant virology, with a primary focus on begomoviruses and nanoviruses that cause significant economic damage to major crops such as tomatoes, cucurbits, and legumes. The lab investigates viral transmission mechanisms, including whitefly and seed-borne transmission, host range expansion, and the emergence of new viral strains in novel geographical regions. A key direction involves the molecular characterization and infectious clone construction of emerging viruses to understand their pathogenicity and develop resistance strategies.

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) is one of the most well-known tomato-infecting begomoviruses and transmitted by Bemisia tabaci. Seed transmission has previously been reported for some RNA viruses, but TYLCV has not previously been described as a seed-borne virus. After the nationwide, massive winter losses of honey bees in Korea during the winter of 2021, samplings were conducted from live honey bees in colonies and dead honey bees nearby colonies in the same bee-farms in six regions in Korea.
