Professor Eun Young Song's research lab specializes in translational immunology and molecular diagnostics, focusing on identifying and validating biomarkers for cancer and infectious diseases. The lab investigates immune system regulation through HLA genetics, explores epigenetic mechanisms in cancer progression—particularly the role of chemokines like CXCL14 in prostate cancer—and develops serum-based biomarkers such as ESM-1 for colorectal cancer. Additionally, the lab contributes to public health research by assessing the prevalence of viral infections like hepatitis B and evaluating the impact of health education on adolescent sexual knowledge.

The three automated quantitative immunoassays showed good diagnostic performance and strong correlations with neutralization antibodies. These assays will be useful in diagnostic assistance, evaluating the response to vaccination, and the assessment of herd immunity in the future.
We have investigated the distribution of HLA class II alleles and haplotypes in 107 Korean families (207 parents and 291 children) for the HLA-DRB1, DRB3/B4/B5, DQA1, DQB1 and DPB1 loci. Numbers of alleles observed for each locus were DRB1: 25, DQA1: 14, DQB1: 15, and DPB1: 13. Only two to three alleles were observed for the DRB3 (*0101, *0202, *0301), DRB4 (*0103, * 0103102 N), and DRB5 (*0101, *0102) loci. These alleles showed strong associations with DRB1 alleles: DRB3*0101 with DRB1*1201, *1
This study analyzed and synthesized findings from selected studies conducted from 1960 through 1997 regarding effects of school sexuality education on adolescents' sexual knowledge. This purpose was achieved using meta-analysis. Sixty-seven studies that met the selection criteria were included in the meta-analysis. The 67 studies reported 72 outcomes regarding sexual knowledge, which were grouped into six independent variables related to knowledge about sexuality. A weighted effect size method d
This study helps to understand the current status of hepatitis B infection and the prevalence of occult HBV infection in a general adult population in Korea.
Chemokines play the key role in initiating immune responses by regulating the attraction and homing of immune cells to the lymphoid and nonlymphoid tissues. CXCL14 is a chemokine that in tumors may act as chemoattractant for monocytes and dendritic cells (DC), which may modulate antitumor immune responses in certain cancers. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms of loss of CXCL14 in prostate cancer cells. Cell treatment with the demethylating agent 5-aza-2-deoxycytidine resulted in the r
No ideal serum markers for screening colorectal cancer (CRC) have been identified. The aim of this study was to determine the usefulness of endothelial cell-specific molecule-1 (ESM-1) as a serum marker for CRC. Illumina microarray was carried out to search CRC-related biomarkers. cDNA microarray detected that ESM-1 was one of the overexpressed genes in CRC. Overexpression of ESM-1 mRNA was confirmed in tissues of CRC by RT-PCR and real-time PCR. Immunohistochemical staining showed strong expres
We compared the performances of 3 Multiple Allergen Simultaneous Test (MAST) assays: RIDA Allergy Screen (R-Biopharm, Darmstadt, Germany), MAST Optigen allergy system (Hitachi Chemical Diagnostics, Mountain View, CA), and Polycheck Allergy (Biocheck GmbH, Munster, Germany). Forty sera that tested positive with the RIDA Allergy Screen (20 for food and 20 for inhalant panel) were subjected to MAST Optigen and Polycheck Allergy. For 26 available sera with discrepant results, 62 ImmunoCAP allergen-s
Fourth-generation human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) screening assays have improved sensitivity, but vary in performance characteristics. The purpose of this study was to evaluate four different fourth-generation HIV-1 assays. These assays included the AxSYM HIV Ag/Ab Combo (Abbott diagnostics, Delkenheim, Germany), ARCHITECT HIV Ag/Ab Combo (Abbott), Elecsys 2010 HIV Combi (Roche Diagnostics GmbH, Mannheim, Germany), and Elecsys HIV Combi PT (Roche). A total of 1,306 samples that included 1
In patients with negative T-cell cytotoxicity crossmatches, the presence of class II DSA and its level at the time of transplantation were associated with the occurrence of AMR. Pretransplant DSA measurement with Luminex single antigen assay would be useful in renal transplantation.
