Professor Hanbyoul Cho's research lab focuses on identifying and validating novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets in gynecological cancers, particularly epithelial ovarian and cervical cancers. The lab employs integrated molecular approaches, including gene expression profiling, immunohistochemistry, and functional studies using in vitro and in vivo models, to explore the roles of molecules such as GLUT-1, LCN2, API5, ALDH1A2, and STIP1 in cancer progression and patient outcomes. A central theme is the translation of molecular findings into clinically relevant prognostic indicators and potential therapeutic strategies, with a strong emphasis on metabolism, stress response, and epigenetic regulation in tumor biology.

Illumina microarray was used to identify differentially expressed genes in three epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) cells. To validate the microarray data, mRNA and protein level of glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1) was examined. GLUT-1 had an EOC/normal cells ratio of 5.51 based on microarray. We recently identified lipocalin2 (LCN2) as being upregulated in ovarian cancer cell lines. The purpose of this study was to validate LCN2 upregulation in ovarian cancers and to investigate its potential as a serum biomarker. We assayed LCN2 expression in ovarian cancers using real-time PCR and IHC. Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 family member A2 (ALDH1A2) is a rate-limiting enzyme involved in cellular retinoic acid synthesis. However, its functional role in ovarian cancer remains elusive.
