Professor Han-Sin Jeong's research lab specializes in translational and molecular oncology, with a focus on the biological mechanisms of cancer progression, particularly lymph node metastasis and tumor angiogenesis. The lab investigates the pathophysiology of rare thyroid malignancies, such as primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid, and explores advanced imaging techniques to evaluate tumor behavior and treatment response. A key research direction involves understanding the limitations of antiangiogenic therapies in lymph node metastases, revealing that sprouting angiogenesis does not drive early metastatic growth, which has critical implications for treatment strategies. The lab also contributes to the development of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for complex vascular lesions, such as hemangiomas and vascular malformations, through interventional radiology and image-guided interventions.

Our preliminary results suggest that integrated PET/CT does not provide any additional benefit when compared to US and CECT for the initial evaluation of cervical node levels in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma.
We provide preclinical and clinical evidence that sprouting angiogenesis does not occur during the growth of lymph node metastases, and thus reveals a new mechanism of treatment resistance to antiangiogenic therapy in adjuvant settings. The targets of clinically approved angiogenesis inhibitors are not active during early cancer progression in the lymph node, suggesting that inhibitors of sprouting angiogenesis as a class will not be effective in treating lymph node metastases.

Ethanol sclerotherapy was used for 12 cases, with a success rate of 50.0% and a permanent complication rate of 8.3%. Surgical excision combined with embolization was used for 13 patients. Although all patients achieved successful resolution of their HNAVM after surgical excision, 15.4% suffered from permanent complications. In total, 16/20 patients (80.0%) eventually achieved a > or = 75% reduction in the size of their lesions.
