Professor Heejung Kim's research lab focuses on interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of cultural psychology, healthcare innovation, and electrical engineering. The lab explores cultural differences in values such as uniqueness and conformity, with applications in mental health assessment and community-based interventions for older adults. It also investigates advanced power electronics, particularly in reducing common-mode voltage in neutral-point-clamped inverters for more efficient and reliable motor drives. The lab emphasizes practical applications through machine learning, sensor-based monitoring, and patient-centered care strategies.

Uniqueness has positive connotations of freedom and independence in American culture, whereas conformity has positive connotations of connectedness and harmony in East Asian culture. The present research examined how these cultural values and individual preferences for uniqueness and conformity influence each other. In Studies 1 and 2, East Asian and European American preferences for uniqueness were measured using abstract figures. In Study 3, the choice of pens by East Asians and European Ameri
Impaired function in care-recipients predicts caregiver burden, and also interacts with demographical- and caregiving-related factors. Thus, it will be beneficial to both care-recipients and caregivers to target nursing interventions and community services to improve the functional abilities of individuals with dementia.
In this paper, the relationship between common-mode voltage and switching states in a neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is clarified, and a new pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) strategy for reducing the common-mode voltage in an NPC inverter-fed AC motor drives is proposed. Among a total of 27 switching states in the NPC inverter, the proposed PWM uses only 19 switching states that generate common-mode voltage of which the magnitude is the same or less than one-sixth of DC-bus voltage. Moreover, t
This study provides preliminary evidence for developing a machine learning program to predict the classification of depression groups in older adults living alone. Clinicians should consider using this method to identify underdiagnosed subgroups and monitor daily progression regarding treatment or therapeutic intervention in the community setting. Furthermore, more efforts are needed for researchers and clinicians to diversify data collection methods by using a survey, EMA, and a sensor.

This study provides an important understanding of how family members use Internet-based information and support systems during child caregiving. Healthcare providers and policy makers should integrate family needs into their current practices and policies. Further rigorous research is required to design efficient and effective nursing interventions.
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is characterized by chronic highly pruritic and relapsing inflammatory skin lesions. Despite its growing prevalence, therapeutic treatments remain limited. Natural immune modulators from herbal extracts or derivatives may be useful for treating AD symptoms. This study examined the effect of 7,8,4'-trihydroxyisoflavone (7,8,4'-THIF), a metabolite of soy isoflavone daidzin, on AD-like symptoms. Repeated epicutaneous application of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) was performe
Although the Internet provided useful resources for caregivers of persons with dementia, dementia caregivers reported lower levels of health-related Internet use compared to the general public. Our findings confirmed the impact of age, education levels, and/or income on Internet use reported in previous studies. However, the predictive value of subjective responses of caregiving stress for health-related Internet use was a new addition. These findings will assist health care providers, researche
Photochromic fluorophore Sn(TTP)(DTE)2, in which two phenolic derivatives of 1,2-dithienylethene are axially coordinated to (5,10,15,20-tetratolylporphyrinato)tin(IV) in trans position, has been synthesized and fully characterized by various spectroscopic methods. We have also investigated the photoregulated fluorescence switching behavior of Sn(TTP)(DTE)2. The fluorescence of the porphyrin macrocycle in Sn(TTP)(DTE)2 greatly depends on the state of the 1,2-dithienyletene photochromic switch. In
Older Koreans living alone were exposed to different risk factors for depressive symptoms compared to those living with others. Non-modifiable sociodemographic and health status factors were highly associated with depressive symptoms relative to health behaviors; thus, it is important to conduct early assessment and classification of vulnerable subgroups regarding geriatric depression. Specific assessment instruments should be prepared in practice according to living arrangements among older Kor
The coronavirus pandemic highlights the urgent need for increased support related to mental health concerns. This study aimed to synthesize the findings of empirical studies reporting the post-traumatic stress symptoms in the general population during the coronavirus pandemic. Whittemore and Knafl's (Journal of Advanced Nursing, 52, 546, 2005) integrative review methodology was used to analyse and synthesize the peer-reviewed studies. Five electronic databases, PubMed, CINAHL, PsychINFO, Cochran
