Professor Hemanta Hazarika's research lab specializes in geotechnical earthquake engineering with a focus on sustainable and low-cost seismic protection solutions using recycled materials, particularly scrap tire-derived products such as tire chips and shreds. The lab investigates the dynamic behavior of soil-structure systems under seismic loading, emphasizing liquefaction mitigation, energy dissipation, and improved foundation performance through innovative ground improvement techniques. Key research directions include large-scale shaking table testing, cyclic triaxial testing, and non-destructive evaluation of geosynthetic materials for infrastructure resilience.

A series of large-scale underwater shaking table tests was performed on a gravity type model caisson protected by a cushioning technique using tire chips (scrap tire derived recycled product). The function of the tire chips cushion is to reduce the load and restricting the permanent displacement of such waterfront retaining structures during earthquakes by exploiting the compressibility, the ductility and the energy absorbing capacity of tire chips. The seismic performance of such earthquake res
To prevent vibration-induced and liquefaction-induced damage to residential buildings during earthquakes, a low-cost technique has been developed and described here. It utilizes a mixture of tire chips and gravel as the horizontal reinforcing inclusion under the foundation of residential houses. The horizontal reinforcing inclusion refers to a layer of tire chips and gravel which is placed horizontally beneath the foundation. This mixture of tire chips and gravel provides sufficient bearing capa
There was a shallow earthquake in the Central Sulawesi province of Sulawesi island of Indonesia with a moment magnitude (Mw) 7.5 on 28th September 2018 at 18:02:44 local time. The event was preceded by major foreshocks and followed by aftershocks of significant magnitude. The epicenter of the main shock was in the Donggala regency of Minahasa peninsula of Central Sulawesi, approximately 70 km from the provincial capital of Palu. The earthquake was caused by the tectonic movement of the left late
This paper presents results of a series of element testing and model testing in which tire derived geosynthetics such as tire chips are utilized as liquefaction preventive backfill material. Undrained cyclic shear tests were conducted on tire chips and sand mixed tire chips for various percentages of mixtures, and the liquefaction potentials of the mixtures were evaluated. The best mixing percentage of tire chips was found to be close to 50% by the total volume of sand. Also, a model shaking tab
Applications of scrap tyre-derived recycled products (such as tyre chips and tyre shreds) in geotechnical engineering projects have been increasing largely because of their potential economic and environmental benefit. This paper first addresses and evaluates two novel Japanese experiences of tyre-derived recycled products in ground improvement applications. It then discusses and evaluates the deformation mechanism of such materials through non-destructive testing techniques. Direct shear testin
The 2016 Kumamoto earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.0 (Japanese intensity = 7) that struck on April 16 brought devastation in many areas of Kumamoto Prefecture and partly in Oita Prefecture in Kyushu Region, Japan. The earthquake preceded a foreshock of magnitude 6.5 (Japanese intensity = 7) on April 14. This paper summarizes the damage brought to geotechnical structures by the two consecutive earthquakes within a span of twenty-eight hours. The paper highlighted some of the observed damag
To protect coastal structures from the damage caused by the impact force of a tsunami, a new concept of using waste tires behind such structures is introduced in this paper. A physical model for tsunami impact force simulation was developed to evaluate the reduction effect of tsunami impact force by the tire structures. Model tests also were performed to evaluate the stiffness of tire structures. From an esthetic point of view, cultivation of suitable plants inside the tires is also proposed. Fi
This study focuses on accumulation of basic data on deformation and energy absorbing characteristics of geosynthetics (recycled tire chips and geogrid), which are used as liquefaction prevention materials for shallow foundations. Because tire chips have high compressibility, decrease of bearing capacity and excessive differential settlement of the foundation ground may arise. A new reinforcement method, using gravel mixed tire chips layer and layers of geogrid, was proposed to compensate for the
